Set Up Multiple Minecraft Servers On 1 IP

Why run multiple Minecraft servers on a single IP?

Customers are increasingly asking for an IP for every Minecraft server they own. This is due to the fact that each server should be run on the default port (25565), so players don't have to wonder how to access it. This is a great feature for players who are new to the game and it makes it easy for them to use. However, it can also increase operational costs.

IP Space – The world is running out of IP blocks. This means that the cost of an IP block will increase by 2 to 5x if demand rises and supplies dry out. DDoS Protection- Protection is typically sold per-IP as this is the way most companies assess "risk", and "usage" for their system. So basically, the more IPs protected, the bigger of a target the server is. Protecting a single IP with multiple servers on it will give you major cost savings. (ReliableSite offers DDoS protection free of charge against attacks below 10 Gbps. However, this protection only applies to higher levels.

Minecraft (since version 1.3.1), now supports SRV record support, eliminating port woes for players. You can set up multiple Minecraft servers on 1 IP, running on different ports, and set up a SRV record to automatically direct a player to the right port.

Example: mc1.reliablesite.net > 1.2.3.4 port 25565 mc2.reliablesite.net > 1.2.3.4 port 25566 mc3.reliablesite.net > 1.2.3.4 port 25567

Name: The domain name where this record is valid. TTL: standard DNS time-to-live field. Class: Standard DNS class field (this is always IN). Priority: The priority of the target host. A lower value is more preferred. Weight: A relative weight of records with the same priority. port: The TCP/UDP port on which the Minecraft server is located. target: The host name of the machine that provides the service.

If your DNS provider is asking for service, type _minecraft. If it requests for proto or protocol (or both), type _tcp.
