Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a regular visitor to Moldova, emphasizes the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week with top officials of the government as well as the leaders of local Jewish communities. They discussed topics like security for the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory education, antisemitism, and Holocaust memory. WJC was represented by Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) and Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association) together with Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General, EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
"The World Jewish Congress thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious welcoming and expressed determination to preserve the memories of the Holocaust," said Singer. "Our Moldovan community is small but it is a strong and committed community. We ask the Republic of Moldova that it place anti-Semitism at the top of its list. Emmanuil Grinshpun The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative aspects of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definitions of antisemitism. Singer added that it is important to condemn anti-Semitism publicly. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted the Moldovan authorities' dedication to establishing an open society to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi for his favorable cooperation with Moldova's WJC.

The foreign minister also noted that Chisinau's Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 a declaration accepting the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies chaired by Elie Wiesel. Then, in January 2017 the Government ratified the Action Plan on its implementation.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation visited Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restitution of Jewish properties in Moldova and cemeteries that are in need of renovation and economic opportunities related to slaughter that is kosher and the possibility of tourism ventures for the local Jewish center. Concerning preservation of Jewish cemetery sites, the minister stated his willingness to help by launching an initial project that would involve 10 sites in the country.

Singer and the WJC delegation also met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc, Moldovan Education Minister for a discussion on teaching Holocaust education and the preservation of memory. The discussion included topics such as the creation of the Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments that honor Holocaust victims as well as the importance of the proper and respectful maintenance of Jewish cemeteries. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her attention and involvement both in the areas of education and Holocaust commemoration, and also in maintaining a productive and ongoing partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as along with Bilinkis have met with Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) for a discussion on the relations between Jewish communities as well as bilateral relations of Moldova with Israel.

Singer also met with rabbis from Jewish communities across Moldova to discuss key issues regarding religious practice within Moldova. Singer also discussed ways to enhance Jewish daily activities in all areas.
