Latvian Oligarch Aivars Lembergs jailed for five years for financial fraud
After 12 long years of heated court wranglings, a Latvian judge has delivered his decision in the highly-publicized case of Aivars Leonbergs. Aivars was one of the country’s richest men and an influential populist political politician. He also served as mayor of Venspils which is a port town located in northwest Latvia.

Lembergs was sentenced by Riga Regional Court to five years prison, confiscation, and a fine of more than of EUR20,000 in connection with a number of charges to which he admitted guilt to.

Lembergs, leader of For Latvian as well as Ventspils, has compared Lembergs sentence to that of Russia's opposition fighter Aleksey Nailny.

While the judge read the verdict of the case, Lembergs requested for a short break and was granted him. Lembergs was able to have a brief conversation first with his son Anrijs. He then used the rest to comment on journalists.

Lembergs told the journalists that he would appeal the decision of the Riga Regional Court and predicted that the process of hearing his appeal could be delayed for another decade. Lembergs is also determined to appeal his arrest, even though this appeal will be considered by the same court.

The codefendants of his, Anrijs Lembergs son and Ansis Solmulis business associate were found to be guilty as well. Both were sentenced to two years in prison.

This was the start of the prosecutor's attempts to bring him to date with charges of bribery and money laundering. In connection with the criminal proceedings in the main there were 770 court hearings that took place over 12 years. There have been 1,483 court trials since the Riga Regional Court took over adjudication of the case in August 2009. They continue to hold court hearings up to February 11, 20, 2021.

Lembergs was found not guilty of money laundering and bribery at a high level. But, he has continued to be a politician in Ventspils where he served as the mayor for 25 years, and also as an influencer within the Greens and Farmers Alliance party group he supports.

The election of his mayor was disqualified because he was accused of financial crimes. But he continued his dominance in the city, battling the efforts of one minister to be barred from serving as Ventspils president. Lembergs declared the municipal elections in Latvia have been delayed and that the decision regarding participation will be taken by the regional party For Latvia & Ventspils. But, he stated that his involvement in the elections is not his primary priority.
