How To Setup A Simple Minecraft Server

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home networks configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. Minecraft Realms has a small, private server that you can buy for your friends. If you want to set up your private server yourself, we do not support home networks.

Here's a guide to help create a server for your friends so they can play together.

Java must be installed on the computer hosting the server in order to run.jar files. 1. Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file (The X's will be the current version number) 2. After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it "Minecraft Server". 3. Drag and copy the.jar file into your Minecraft Server folder.

4. While the file browser is open, open the command prompt in the start menu.

5. You can check if Java has been installed by entering "java -version" without quotes in the command prompt.

6. To start the server, you will need to change the directory to the location where you have the Minecraft Server folder and the .jar file located in it.

7. Click on the browser directory to open Windows. (Your personalization settings will affect the color and theme of your file browser.) Copy this address into your clipboard.

8. Type without quotes "cd" hit space and then paste the address you just copied, then hit enter.- This should look like "cd C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server"

9. After entering the directory, enter the following commands manually.

10. After pressing enter, you will see the failed to loads properties and failed to open eula.txt errors. You don't have to worry, as we will only need to run the command again once these files are configured.

11. Open the "eula.txt." file that you have created using your text editor. You will need to change the eula=false value to eula=true, and then save.

12. You'll also see a "server.properties” file. If it doesn’t appear like an editable file, right click it and click “Open with” or click "More app” if you are using Windows 10. Scroll down and select your text editing program or notepad. It is recommended to keep the box that states "Always use This App to Open.properties Files" if you do not want to repeat this step each time you need to edit the properties files.

13. This page will present you with many settings. We will only be focusing on the essential ones to get your web server up and running. Note the query.port setting. This will be the port you forward on your local router to allow inbound connections.

14. The gamemode setting allows you to choose whether you want survival or creative. After the "="., type what you want.

Spawn Protection is the radius of blocks that cannot be broken by the server spawn. You can change this value to 0 if they are not to be broken.

15. The allow-nether specifies if you would like the Nether on your server.

Server difficulty can be set by difficulty. This can be either normal, peaceful, normal, or difficult.

16. The pvp setting determines if you want players to be able to hurt one another.

17. The max-players specifies the maximum amount of people who can join your server. You may want to adjust this to how much RAM you have dedicated to your server.

18. The level-seed allows you insert a seed for a world to generate from if you have one.

Motd sets the message displayed in the Minecraft server browser. This message will be visible to other players after they have added your IP address to their list.

Now all you have to do is rerun the launch command at the command prompt. You can launch the server again by repeating steps 8-9.

Make sure that you are in the Minecraft Server directory.

You can find more information about the settings of the server.properties.file here. Make sure to scroll down to the "Java Edition".

You will also need to forward the port listed in server.properties query.port. It defaults at 25565. You will need to specify the port to forward in your router configurations. This process may vary depending on the router manufacturer. If you need assistance with forwarding a port please refer to your router’s help site/manual.

If you didn't specify anything in the server ip setting, default will be to point to your public IP. This is what other players will need for connection to your server to play with you.

You can search for your public IP address by simply typing "What is your public IP?" Make sure you search for IPv4 IP addresses. This means they only have three decimals, and not numbers.

We strongly recommend that you do not publish your public IP and make any public announcements with it once you have it. Publicizing your public IP can pose a security risk to your home network. Only give your IP to people that you trust and would enjoy playing with.
