How To - Run Your Own Minecraft Server On A Mobile

Last night my son wanted to play Minecraft with his mates. It's easy if you are in the same house or at the same WiFi access point. During New Years Eve he spent an hour with his mates, iPads a-plenty, on the sofa creating new worlds together.

They were all in the same house, so after hooking into the same WiFi hotspot they all connected up easily thanks to the clever "Publish to LAN" feature and off they went.

It can be difficult to connect if you are in different locations. It involves connecting with a server over the internet. If you want to make your own, you will need to either download a Windows executable (or a Java program) which can be run on Linux. There might be a Windows computer in your house, but do they really need it to be on all the times? It will only show this screen...

This will mean that you will need a computer (or a server on an internet server) to run the program. You'll also need to open the appropriate ports.

However, you can actually do all this on an old Android phone. You will need the PocketMine application and a phone that can be left on. Before you do that, though, you will need to be familiar with how your broadband router functions. Most routers have strict settings and your broadband provider won’t let you alter them too much. If you're looking for more information, here are the details.

Grab the app and download whatever version you fancy. The "Stable", for me, worked well.

I'll come back to the rest of the app setup process in a minute but it's all pretty self-explanatory, needing a name and a not much else.

You'll see this little symbol at the top of Minecraft if you open it and click "Play" then “New".

This is something that no one has ever done. They just create a whole world and then go. But, it will ask you to hit that in a second.

This is where you will need to configure your broadband router. First, find the external IP address for your broadband connection. You can search for "my IP" on Google or use turboluck.com/my IP to find it. You'll need this information to give to your friends and relatives so they can add it to their iPads or tablets to join you server. However, they'll be trying to connect on a certain port. This can be almost anything on Minecraft, so choose one (or keep the standard one it comes up with as default) and then go into the advanced setting of your broadband router. You will need to search for "NAT/PAT". Tell your router to forward requests for your selected external port to the appropriate internal port on your LAN's IP address.

Yes, it can be confusing. Let's get started with the PocketMine application. Run it and it'll ask you to create a server name, a port and what sort of game you want to create (Creative, Survival, Adventure, Spectator). You can put the phone anywhere you like after you have started it. However, you will need to know what the local IP address of that phone is - head into your WiFi settings and find out what IP address it has internally. It could be something like 192.168.0.7. Make a note.

Next, go to your router and edit your NAT/PAT rules so that requests for your magic port (say 22535), go to 192.168.0.7 (your smartphone) on port 22535. This is essentially routing.

Then, it's as simple as asking your friends to enter your IP address and port settings. Provided the app is running on your spare / old Android phone, you're set, and everyone can play together. Job done.
