I'd like to share with you a story from my last Arctic boat trip. It sounded amazing, National Geographic trip thru frozen ice to return, with Polar bears, and numerous other wildlife. There would be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made machinery was designed to combat the elements and navigate through the frozen northern wilderness. It sounded like an enormous undertaking, a grand fight with the weather and the pole.


It was suggested that I bring everything I would be able to carry in my luggage. I did manage to pack my laptop, as well as a big screen to expand my work area. As per their report, the power wasn't an issue. I was still not sure what was going to take place. I did not know that, just two days into my 14-day adventure, I would lose my Internet connection and be gone for 10 days. It was a shock. I was just stunned. I was shocked to learn that any trip, no matter how long or difficult, could result in a sudden disconnect from the technology world. These days , nobody is concerned about having to turn off their internet. Internet is everywhere and if your home network is experiencing issues, there are many nearby McDonalds that provide free WiFi access. Additionally, you could take your laptop to Starbucks so that you can relax at a table and surf the Internet whenever you want to. No cafe or restaurant can aid you from north. You're hours from the nearest generator that generates electricity. You can't get free internet anywhere. There are two options to get out in such circumstances. You could be offline or bring an internet connection via satellite.

I am unable to afford a satellite phone. It's just too expensive, especially to use for Internet access. However, I'll make a complete collection of audio and video prior to venturing into the unknown without Internet. The last time I was online, I had two tracks. They were both accidentally downloaded way back in the past, and I was limited in my choices of music to three jazz tracks and one with a name I didn’t recognize. This is it. Four tunes for two weeks of no-things.. If I knew this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have filled my laptop with movies, television shows, and music videos. I could spend hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's easy to download the podcasts, convert them to MP3 format and save them to my computer. Then I can just relax in my bed and enjoy whatever it is I want to hear at home but don't have time for. It would have been my gold hour which is about two weeks' worth of gold. It ended up being two weeks of staring at the ceiling and trying to catch passengers every time there was a sound coming from the corridors.

It was empty physically and literally. I've never felt so bored. The ice was thick, and I was aware that it could cause problems later on and the boat was forced to turn around and tug back towards the shore. While this isn't surprising but there were alternatives. Many hours of idle time could be spent listening to podcasts and DIY videos for fixing issues at home, or simply listening to music. Next time I will convert YouTube videos to mp4 and MP3 formats on my laptop. There's no reason to feel down music is always uplifting your spirits. Be aware that Netflix and Hulu apps allow you to download films and shows to your computer to view offline. These can also be taken with you when you travel long distances to the Arctic. Don't give up hope. Best of luck!
