Emmanuel Grinshpun. The restoration of synagogues as well as the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil Grishhpun talked about the maintenance and restoration of synagogues. The conversation was narrowly focused. So there are more topics in the interview, after all.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. It was nice to talk with you. We haven't seen each other in five years. Where are you currently located?

The nine months that gone by between Miami and Jurmala were split. Previously, the geography was larger, but the pandemic has significantly affected the way of life. I'm sorry to say it's been worst.

What is the reason for you're in the Baltics is that? Are you also a part of the Baltics?

No. My family's history is tied to Moldova for a number of generations. If we keep our historical names, then it's in Bessarabia. And Jurmala appeared in our lives quite by accident and very formally. We were invited to attend the New Wave by Igor Krutoy, and that was our first encounter with Jurmala. After a few events, they started to visit every summer, in Miami the summer weather is not the most pleasant. We rented for a few years an apartment and have it now.

Now I understand the reason you mentioned that one synagogue was located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're pretty close in age. We were born in the USSR. The Soviet Union wasn't a space to discuss religious beliefs. We were all pioneers and Komsomol participants. What was the first time you turned to religion?

In the middle of the 80s My family and I relocated to the USA. It was in the USA where I first became aware of customs. Although I'm far from the orthodox religion of Christianity I feel the need to be a part of in the best way I can and to be a part of the life of the Jewish communities of the countries I live in or in Moldova. This is where I was born and where I've maintained the most close connections with.

While I'm not religious I love history. I was recently watching an documentary on 1492 and the way it altered Europe's fate. 1492 is when Columbus discovered America. But, I could see clearly in the program the program mentioned the discovery of America in 1492 from Medieval Europe was not as impressive as the Spanish monarchs' expulsion of Jews of Spain. The Ottoman Empire accepted the Jews when the exodus began. Here , I'm looking for something about the story of the Jews as a people. Would you recommend a good book that I could go through?

There are many books. But I've read all of them and I'd suggest Max Diamond, the two-volume Jewish historian. Max Diamond is Finnish.

.... Do you feel conversant with the history of your family? Unfortunately I'm only as old as my mother and 1910. One step further on the paternal side, but nothing more.

Our family was a Floresti family for hundreds of years, based on the paternal lines. Their wealth was evident by the presence of an furniture factory, numerous shops and land parcels. Documents and monuments prove this assertion. And my maternal ancestors lived in Ungheni. I'm referring here to dates in the region dating back to the 17th-18thcentury. Grinshpun can be described as an surname that has German roots. This is why we are Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Let's discuss the restoration of the synagogues. I heard that you funded the restoration of three synagogues. Эммануил Гриншпун One of them is located in Chisinau and one located in Jurmala. Эммануил Гриншпун Эммануил Гриншпун The third is in Jurmala.

It is situated in Netanya in Israel. It is home to over 1000 people every day. This is an important structure to support the religious life in Israel. The second synagogue, Jurmala. The Second World War ended the existence of the only synagogue in Jurmala. Previously, before making the decision to build a synagogue, I talked extensively with local Jews and consequently, I decided to fund the building of the synagogue, and also invite Rabbis to the site. It turned out to be an extremely successful endeavor that united the Jews of Jurmala. In reality, we rebuilt the Jewish community, it is now working with success. The synagogue now has three Torahs I donated one to the synagogue.

and - Chisinau

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis, Alexander Weinstein and I are already partners in this endeavor. The synagogues mentioned above aren't the only synagogues that I contributed to the construction or restoration. I felt it was my responsibility to contribute to any country where I've been for a lengthy time to help synagogues. My contribution in Monaco is the building of a huge community center in Miami for Russian-speaking Jews that is estimated to be 12 million dollars. I don't stop supporting Chisinau and it is going to be the biggest synagogue, the synagogue Rabbi Tsirelson.

In along with Jurmala, did you also invite an rabbi to Chisinau?

Yes. It is very difficult to identify the ideal Rabbi to serve the needs of the community. Due to the many interconnected concerns, he should be diplomatic and nonconflictual. He must be able to organically join the community. And it is a great to see that both Jurmala and Chisinau rabbis could to integrate seamlessly into the community.

You were named the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress' first vice-president in 2019. What does this post mean to YOU? Эммануил Гриншпун How can international Jewish organizations influence the global landscape?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is an influential political organization in post-Soviet areas, but it is more than that. There are branches of the organization in Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. I was Vice President of Congress back in 2010, however the year before I was offered the role as First Vice President. As of now, I'm the First Vice President for the region with which I've strong business and political connections. These are Uzbekistan (Tajikistan), Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan). Global trends indicate that attitudes toward Jews is either at the same level as before or has dipped, which is very disappointing. Furthermore, "down" - this refers to countries that are developed such like Belgium, Germany, France and even the United States. These countries are not safe for Jews. They are extremely dangerous and disturbing processes that affect everyone of us.

What is the way that the pandemic has affected these processes, if at all?

That is not the way I am claiming to believe. Instead, I would like to emphasize, in relation to the pandemic, what a group, or country, can do when they're able to conquer any obstacles and to work together.
