How To Set Up A Minecraft Server On Linux

Minecraft is a popular sandbox indie game. It was first created by Markus "Notch", an Swedish programmer, and later published by Mojang. It is a game that involves breaking and placing blocks. The original purpose of the game was to build structures to protect against nocturnal animals. However, over time, people began to collaborate to create imaginative and beautiful things.



Setting up minecraft server on your Linux server is simple and straight forward task. Minecraft server should have at minimum 2GB RAM memory. After we log in, we need ensure that our repositories keep up-to dated.



Minecraft server requires java installed on the server. The following command will be executed to verify that Java is installed.



If Java has been installed, we will receive a message containing information about the current Java version. Dk571 If we don't have Java, we will get error, like "Command not found" or similar. The following command will be executed if Java is needed to be installed:



We will also need to install screen onto our server. We will be using it later in order to start the minecraft server. It will keep the connection running even after you close the console. To install screen, we execute the following command:



After we have installed all prerequisites, it is time to install Minecraft server. To keep Minecraft files safe, we create a directory.



Once it is downloaded we will need to run it. We will run it inside screen, so it will keep running in background all the time. To create the screen and then start the Minecraft server we need to execute:



We will be able to see the status and output, as well a message indicating that it is "done". We can easily exit the screen and re-attach to it any time. To exit the screen hit CTRL+A and then click the "d” key.



To reattach the screen, first list all screens and then attach to the one with the ID.



You can edit the main configuration file which will be located in ~/minecraft/server.properties and change all the settings from there. You're now all set and the Minecraft server is installed. Invite all your friends and have fun.
