How To Use Microsoft Azure To Host A Minecraft Server

If you've ever been interested, here is a way to set up your own Minecraft Server using Microsoft Azure. Depending on what you use to play Minecraft, such as Windows 10 PCs or Macs, there are many reasons why you might choose to use Microsoft Azure to host Minecraft Servers instead of your own.

Here's a short list:

- No installation is required to choose a preconfigured Minecraft server virtual computer to launch from Azure Marketplace. - Select from a variety of VM sizes to meet both your cost and performance requirements. You can choose between limiting your home network access and exposing your home network network to the internet by running a server on your personal machine. Avoid hardware costs by only purchasing a virtual machine when you use it. You can then shut it down when it is not. Whitelist trusted players so you can connect from anywhere without having to deal with firewalls or port forwarding. Azure Storage Service offers disks that are fully backed by Azure Storage Service. This means you can be free from worrying about losing data due to hardware failure. - You can delete the whole thing and then deploy another one if it goes down. You can start from the beginning if you regularly back up your world.

Now that you have the reasons to use Azure, let's take a look at what steps you need to complete how to set up your own Minecraft Server.

1. Set up a Mojang account and buy Minecraft. You need these in order to play Minecraft and to be successful in actually setting up a Minecraft Server.

2. Get a Microsoft Azure account. There's a free trial, plus some free credits for your first month on Microsoft Azure.

3. Select the Minecraft Server Virtual Machine from the Azure Marketplace.

4. Click "Create Virtual Machine".

5. Next, log into your Microsoft Azure Account and click on "Create".

6. Here you will need to complete some important configuration steps (some of which are optional)

Choose a name for the server. The URL will be name.cloudapp.net. - Enter a username for administrator access. - Define a password for the server. - Optional. Configure Storage, Diagnostics, and Network. - Optional. Select or delineate a name to group Azure resources. - Optional. Select a location or data center to host your server. Pick a location near your users.

7. Click "Create", and Azure will create your Minecraft Server. (This may take several minutes so wait!

8. Once this is done, your Minecraft server should be ready. In order to connect to your server in Minecraft, use the URL and Port 25565 like this: Minecraftservername.cloudapp.net:25565

9. If you do not have the most up-to-date version of Minecraft, you may get an error message telling you to update your Minecraft server. Update your Minecraft Server to the latest version.

10. Logging into your server via SSH (available on Linux and Mac) or PuTTY on Windows is the best way to update it. Bash and SSH will be coming to Windows 10 later this summer in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

11. After logging into your Minecraft server with you username and password, go to the folder of your Minecraft Server "cd /srv/minecraft_server".

12. Use CURL to download the latest Minecraft server version. Currently, this would be "sudo curl -remote-name ttps://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/versions/1.10/minecraft_server.1.10.jar". This is the link to download the latest server version.

13. While in the correct folder, you can update the ops.json file so you have the correct permissions to modify the game while you are logged into our server. You can edit the file with nano by typing "sudo num ops.json". Use your Minecraft username to edit the file. Find your Minecraft unique ID here.

[ "uuid": "uuid", "name": "minecraft_username", "level": 4 ]

14. You can now save the file. Save the file by pressing CTRL + O, and exit Nano using CTRL+ x. You can also edit the "server.properties” file to manage different configuration settings. The Minecraft Wiki provides more information on your Minecraft server properties.

15. In order to use the current version of Minecraft Server that you downloaded, you need to edit the service configuration using Nano like this: "sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/minecraft-server.service". You will need to reference the new version of the Minecraft Server here (see below).

16. All that's left is to save the file.

17. Next, you will just need to stop and restart the Minecraft Server service. You may also have to reload systemd before using "systemctl-daemonreload". To restart the service, you can run "systemctl start minecraft-server".

18. It may take a few minutes for the service to restart once you've done that. After restarting the service, you can refresh it in your Minecraft client. Then, connect to your server to begin creating on your Minecraft Server.

19. Hooray! Congratulations! You now have your Minecraft Server running on Microsoft Azure.
