Minecraft Says It Wants Nothing To Do With NFTs, Blockchain

While some industries are still sussing out their opinions on NFTs, the video game community is making it clear: NFTs stand for "No F'n Thanks" in their industry.



The latest company to take a stand against non-fungible tokens: Mojang Studios, the developer of the massively popular video game, Minecraft.



In a statement put out today on the official Minecraft website, titled simply "Minecraft and NFTs," the company made it crystal clear that it would not permit any sort of blockchain or NFT integration with its game.



Mojang Studios & Minecraft have outlined several reasons why they are against NFTs. They made it clear that fake shortage plays a significant part in it. NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are basically digital assets stored on a blockchain. A unique token is generated and connected to a file to prove ownership. This has made NFTs into speculative asset.



The statement makes clear that Minecraft is not against monetizing, and uses the example of users charging for access to a Minecraft server as an approved use case. The developer is opposed because NFTs could alter the gameplay and give players who have monetary resources an advantage in-game.



"To ensure that Minecraft players have an inclusive and safe experience, blockchain technologies cannot be integrated into our Minecraft client and servers applications nor can they be used for creating NFTs associated any in-game material, including worlds or skins, personas items, or other mods," reads the statement.



The developer also raised concerns about the trustworthiness third-parties who mint Minecraft NFTs and their tendency to abandon projects and fraudulently inflate NFT prices aftermarkets.



Molly White of Web3 is Going Great succinctly stated, "No blockchain to play block games." The website monitors the scams, frauds and drama in the Web3 world. This includes NFT projects and cryptocurrencies.



White points out that the news of Mojang Studios’ statement caused a drop in the value of existing Minecraft NFT projects (and unauthorized). NFT Worlds also has a token. The token and NFT floor prices crashed by more than 70%, according to NFT Worlds.



Minecraft's Mojang Studios is far from the first video game company to run far away from NFTs. Gamers have stated that they don't like the idea of buying NFTs in addition to the video games they already own. Their anti-NFT opinions have forced industry to follow their lead. Sony has announced Playstation Stars, a loyalty programme that will reward players with digital collectibles. These digital collectibles were not for NFTs, according to the company.

"It's not NFTs. Absolutely not. They can't be sold or traded. It isn't leveraging any blockchain technology and definitely not NFTs," Grace Chen (Sony VP of network marketing, loyalty and licensed merchandise), said in an interview to The Washington Post.



Mojang Studios did conclude its statement by saying they would monitor how blockchain technology develops for any future use cases. This leaves the door open for potential future uses, but it is not clear if this is possible based on the current non-existent possibilities. For the foreseeable future, however, this is a win for gamers who absolutely hate NFTs.
