Jason Momoa Signs On To Star In Warner Bros.' Minecraft Movie

Warner Bros. is getting back into business with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa, bringing him in for their long-gestating Minecraft movie.



The 42-year-old actor has signed on for an unspecified role in the video game adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.



Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), is also joining the team to direct the project, which signifies that it finally has some momentum after nearly a decade of development.

The Minecraft video game was launched in 2011 by Markus Persson, a Swedish game designer and Mojang Studios.



Although the game has no specific goals, users can create worlds using blocks to try and survive in the worlds that they create.

The game became an immediate sensation, with over 100 million users signing up in the first few years that lead to Microsoft's whopping $2.5 billion acquisition of Mojang in 2014.



First game: The Minecraft game was launched in 2011. It was created by Markus Persson (a Swedish game designer) and developed by Mojang Studios.



There have been many spin-offs, such as Minecraft: Story Mode with Telltale Studios 2014, Minecraft Earth 2019 and Minecraft Dungeons 2020.



Shortly after its release, a number of filmmakers and producers expressed interest but Mojang's CEO Carl Manneh said in an interview they would only engage, 'if the right idea comes along.'



Creator Persson revealed that Mojang was in talks with Warner Bros. for a Minecraft film, with Shawn Levy (Free Guy) the first to be attached to direct, from a script by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman).



Spinoffs



Rob McElhenney, the star and co-creator of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, joined the team to direct in 2015. Steve Carell was attached to the star role.



In 2016, production began in an early stage, but that was stopped when Greg Silverman, then-Warner Bros. CEO was fired and was replaced with Toby Emmerich.

Aaron and Adam Nee (The Lost City), came aboard to replace McElhenney & Fuchs in 2018. However, Peter Sollett replaced them in 2019, with the studio setting March 4, 2022 as the release date.



The project was cancelled due to COVID-19. This version never saw the light of day. However, it appears the studio is ready for Minecraft again. There were no details about the story or Momoa.



Mary Parent and Roy Lee (Dune), will produce. Jill Messick will also receive a posthumous producer credit for her work on this film before her death in 2018.
