Planning a speech
>Begin planning for the speech by taking notes about what to say.
*What is the objective or theme of the speech ?
* Who is the audience ?
#What do they know about your topic
#Is your audience full of people who are alike, or is it a diverse group ?
# What is the appropriate tone ?
# What will the audience learn ?
Creating an Outline
>The opening, or hook, is what grabs listeners's attention.
*Say something thought provoking.
*Today i am going to talk to you about Edgar allan pi's story, "The Cask of Amontillado."
* "We had passed through long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs."
>The goal of the speech should be established int he body.
*What is the one thing the audience should walk away away remembering ?
*Follow a logical order, so that one one point builds on the next.
*Don't overwhelm the audience with too much information.
* A quick pack keeps the audience interested.
* Reiterate key points of the speech, and use transitional phrases to make the speech flow.
> Finally, plan the conclusion or closing.
* Summarize the major points . This is critical because the audience must be reminded of what message they should leave with.
Conventions
> After determining what the speech is going to be about, decide how it is going to be delivered.
* One option is reciting the speech from memory.
# This requires confidence in the topic.
# A potential downside is forgetting major points.
* Another option for deliver y is reading from a script; however, this is the least desirable one.
# Use the script only as reference.
*Using notes to deliver the speech is a much more desirable option.
# The notes should have skeletal points to trigger the conversation.
# The notes must also have key words so that key concepts will be addressed.
* Practice pitch, tone of voice, speed, volume, and enunciation.
*Determine whether formal or informal language will be used.
# Formal language is most appropriate for most audiences.
# Informal language is appropriate for friends and family.
> Determine if audio0visual aides such as power point, charts, overheads, and/or handouts will be used in the presentation.
>Rehearse with the equipment, and ,ale sure it's set up correctly ahead of time.
> Practice the speech in front of a mirror to consider the following:
* Proper body language
* Eye contact
* Posture
*Limited movement
* Appropriate attire
