Patronus dalam bahasa Latin berarti 'pelindung' atau 'wali'. Dalam bahasa Latin Kuno, berarti 'ayah'.
Patronus yang benar benar biasanya berbentuk hewan yang cukup berwujud. Sedangkan patronus non-badaniah hanya terlihat seperti gumpalan kabut keperakan.
Untuk memunculkan patronus dibutuhkan memori yang kuat, gerakan togkat dan mantra "Expecto Patronum" ( ex - PEK - toh pa - TROH - num )
Para animagus, memiliki patronus yang dapat berubah sesuai kepribadian atau perasaan penyihir. Contoh, severus snape memiliki patronus rusa betina layaknya lily potter
Jika Wizard adalah Animagus dan dapat memanggil Patronus korporeal, keduanya dapat mengambil bentuk yang sama, seperti yang terjadi pada Minerva McGonagall dan James Potter. Kebanyakan Patronus mengambil bentuk binatang biasa. Tetapi makhluk ajaib seperti milik Albus Dumbledore, Patronus Phoenix.
Ada dua kegunaan mantra patronus. yang pertama dan paling utama adalah untuk mengusir makhluk Dark tertentu seperti Dementor dan Lethifolds. Sebuah Patronus non-jasmani hanya dapat menghambat Dementor, namun jika Patronus berwujud maka dapat mengusir mereka. Penggunaan lainnya adalah untuk menyampaikan pesan.
Penggunaan lainnya adalah untuk menyampaikan pesan. Sumber komunikasi diyakini eksklusif untuk para anggota Orde Phoenix.
