According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air. Among the main culprits: paints and surface finishes. Some paints and finishes release low level toxins into the air, and continue to do so long after initial application. The source of these toxins is a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which, until recently, were essential to the performance of paint and primer.
Recognizing the harmful potential of VOCs, manufacturers began working to reformulate water based paints and primers. While water based products have always contained low VOC levels, they did not adhere well to certain surfaces and were a poor choice when it came to blocking stains and odors.
Different primers perform different tasks.
