Minecraft: How To Make & Play On A Private Server

It is not hard to see that Minecraft's appeal comes from its ability to be played online with friends. From user-generated content to seasonal events, there's no limit to the amount of fun to be had in Minecraft, though sometimes the experience is best enjoyed with a smaller group of people. It's for this reason that private servers exist, as they allow for friends to get together in the comfort of their own digital home without having to worry about strangers or other factors affecting you and your buddies' enjoyment of the game.

You'll need to ensure you have the most recent versions of Java and Minecraft installed before you can host your friends on your personal server. This can be done by clicking on the launcher and waiting for the game to update itself. Java can be found here. Follow the prompts to confirm your agreement and continue. If nothing happens your Java is current.

Next, create a folder in your desktop to make it easy to find the files you are about to download. Go here and click on "minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar" to begin downloading the file. You should place it in the desktop folder you have just created.

Now that the JAR file is where it belongs, create a text file inside the folder. If you don’t know how to do it, click “Home” on the folder windows and then “New Item” in the "New” section. You should now be able to create a text document from the drop-down list.

Copy the red highlighted text and go back to the website from which you downloaded the JAR. Copy this command and copy it into the folder you just created. Once you're satisfied that you have removed all red text from the file, save it as a BATF file.

Your JAR file should now be accompanied by an image that has a few gears. Double-click on the newly created BAT File to initiate the creation of your Minecraft private servers. Several files will be created once the server has completed manifesting itself.

There should be a single text file named "eula" right now. Click on this link to open Notepad. By changing the text that reads "eula=false” into "eula=true", you can confirm that you have accepted the End User License Agreement. Then, save the document and close it. Double-click on the BAT file to restart server setup. If prompted to do so, click "Allow Access" in order to complete the process.
STUFF

After all that is done, it's now time to connect to your personal server to play! Open Minecraft as usual and click "Play." Click "Multiplayer," then click "Direct Connect" near to the bottom. A text field will appear and you can enter "localhost". Do this and click "Join Server" at the bottom to open the server you're hosting and frolic around to your heart's content.

It would be even better if you had friends along. You must first ensure that port forwarding is enabled on the router or that an exception has been made in your firewall to invite them to your private servers. Open your router's webpage and click on the "Port forwarding" section. Make a new rule that you can remember, such as "Minecraft". Make sure that your protocol is set to "TCP" and set up the entry and exit port as 25565. If necessary, save and reboot your router.

Click here to find out your public IP address. This line of text should only be shared with trusted people. Anyone can join your game by having this address. Send your IP information to your friends to have them join your private server. If they aren’t sure how to do that, have them click “Multiplayer,” then “Direct Connect,” then enter the IP address. They should be able join you in-game within a few seconds.

And there you have it. It is important to only give this IP address out to trusted people. Enjoy your new private server now with your friends! Twinfinite offers more helpful guides.
