It has over 250 million registered users. Each day, 14 million people log in to Discord. Discord is great to use to talk to your friends while playing games, but it's also useful for creating places where people can congregate, meet up to find other players, and socialize.

Here's everything you need to know about Discord, including where to get it, what it costs, and why you might want to check it out - especially before firing up your next multiplayer game.

So what is Discord?

Discord, a chat app similar to Skype, TeamSpeak, and professional communication platforms like Slack, is called Discord. It's geared specifically toward video game players, providing them with ways to find each other, coordinate play, and talk while playing. It supports video calls, voice chat, and text, allowing users to get in touch however they please.

Discord is especially helpful if you want to play PC games. Discord makes it easy to chat. It also has search functions that will help you find others and add them into your friends list for quick communication. Many people use it to communicate with each other, play games, and as a social and organizational tool.

Because of this wide range of functionality, Discord has been adopted as a semipublic forum-style community platform. Players can create or join servers, both public and privately, where lots can meet and chat via voice or text.

While most of the servers are related to gaming, you can also find public Discord servers that focus on a variety of topics, including things like anime, cryptocurrency, self-improvement, and just making friends and hanging out. You don't have to create servers for gaming. However, you can still make Discord servers to discuss any topic. Handy places to find and search for public servers include Discord.me, Disboard.org, and Discordservers.com.

Oh, and Discord is now free.

What separates Discord from other platforms?

Discord is a standout among many other free communication programs available online. This is due to its wide range of chat options. It combines the best features from popular programs, like Skype and Slack, but with an easy-to understand interface. Discord's team is committed to making it as efficient and effective as possible.

That versatility has led large groups of users to embrace Discord as a place to meet and chat with people who have similar interests, not just friends. It's a communications app and a social media portal. Although the chat area, which allows users to join public or private "servers," is its most popular feature, the app also has a social forum where people can organize themselves to play games. Discord isn't just for video games. It can be used to connect with friends on private servers or meet up with like-minded people in public ones.

You can create Discord servers in many ways. You can assign different roles to members, such creating roles for moderators and administrators, or creating special roles for active members. You can create different roles for members to make it easier to manage your server and reward active members with access rights.

Discord is also available via a variety means so that it can be used even if you are not seated in front of a gaming console. You can download the PC program to run on your computer. This is the lightweight, portable version that you can use while playing games. There are also a web-based and mobile versions. That means you can interact with people in your Discord chat servers from basically anywhere, extending the social capabilities of the app.

Find a server (or make one)

How does Discord work? Servers. As with other chat apps, such as Slack, Discord lets you set up a chat room it refers to as a server, to which you can invite people. Invite someone to the server and they will receive a link that allows them to join it. They can then text or voice chat with other users using that server. Each server can be broken down further into "channels," small spaces for discussions on specific topics, as opposed to one giant live forum. To make it easier for you to use channels, they can be downloaded in both voice and text versions. You can also make channels on your server private so only invited guests can access them. On top of that, the whole server can be either public, which anyone can join, or private, which makes it invite-only.

You can be a part of multiple servers at a time, making Discord a hub for social interaction. One private server might be reserved for you and your friends, so you can coordinate before you play a game. You can also join several public servers (for example, we joined the local Pokemon Go Discord server in order to find others to raid with). There is no limit to how many servers you can join. You can easily switch from server to server at will: The list of your servers is always displayed on the left side of the app, and choosing your destination is simply a matter of clicking one or another.

Although it is simple to join a server, you will need permission to do so. Discord has many servers that are open to the public. For example, Pokemon Go players in Los Angeles have a PoGo LA server. This server coordinates playing the game in their area. Anyone can join it. Discord also has "verified" servers, which are official servers set up by game studios and other notable entities. These servers serve as official community forums where fans can chat with developers and one another.

It's easy to create your own server. A vertical list is displayed on the left side of your app that lists the servers you're currently in. It makes it easy to switch between them. A "plus" symbol is where you can create a server. You can give it an name and a photo to describe it. Then, select a server that is close to you. Discord will generate a link that will allow you to invite others to use the server.

Once inside, you will see lists for voice or text channels on your server's left sidebar. You can quickly add and name new channels using the "plus" icons near the top of each list. You can control the channel's settings by making them private or invite-only and limiting who can create invite links.

Make friends

Discord, like most chat apps, allows you to create a "friends list" of people who use the app. You can then contact them directly from any server.

It's easy to add friends to your friend list by searching for their names on servers you have already joined. To send a friend request, right-click on the user name. Clicking on a user can bring up their User profile. You will find another button for adding them as a friend.

It's also possible to search for users and add them as friends. If you know the username of the user and they have enabled search in their privacy settings, you can search the search field at left-top of the screen to find them. Clicking on any of the photos will bring up the list and you can add these public people as friends.

You can also send friend requests directly to your friend list without having to search. To add a friend to your Discord client program, click the blue "Add Friend” link at the top of the screen. That'll bring up a field that lets you add the person's complete user name and their four-digit "DiscordTag." The user name you're looking for should come out like this: HelpyHelpnotbot#8877. You'll need to get that info from your friend to add them on Discord, though.

Once you have a few friends, click their names to open a direct messaging feed with them or request video and voice call requests. You can add set up a group video or voice chat with multiple friends, even without a server.

Connect accounts and build a profile

Discord allows you connect to other social media accounts (including, but not limited, Steam, Twitch and Twitter, Spotify and Xbox) to make it easier for you to track down people and build your user profile.

Since the app combines private communications with public chat rooms, connecting accounts goes beyond the usual use of finding people you're already friends with to connect to on Discord. It also makes it easier for people to know who you are in the real world, should you so choose.

It's easy to connect accounts. It works the same way it does with other chat or social networking apps. Most importantly, you only need to enter your password for other accounts. Discord's additional functionality to allow you to connect with people on Discord through other media portals makes it more like a social network. It can be useful if you use it to access public servers to meet like-minded players in different games.

If you're more privacy conscious, you can choose whether or not to have your connected social media accounts appear on your Discord profile by toggling the option within your settings. You can also connect your Xbox account via Discord to have the game displayed in a status message on each server's user lists and within your profile.

Texting it up

You can quickly and easily write text messages to anyone as you navigate servers and channels. There is more to this than just sending quick messages. You can drag GIFs and images into chat by dragging them into the text field, or using the "upload" button on the left side of the text window. You can edit or delete messages you've already sent by hovering over them and clicking the pencil icon.

Text on Discord also supports "Markdown," giving you quick and easy ways to alter the text in your Discord chats without having to learn actual coding. Markdown is particularly useful when formatting text messages. You can add bold, italics or strikethroughs. It's simple to learn and Discord provides a blog post that explains how it all works. If you don't feel like learning Markdown, fear not, you can still spruce up your text using Markdown, just highlight the text you want to add Markdown to and a formatting style bar will appear above the text input field, select the formatting you want to apply and Discord will automatically insert the proper Markdown language, then hit enter to send.

You can also use Discord emotes to respond to messages. All you need to do is click the smiley face with the "+" button to react to something you or someone else typed into the server. Emotes are a fun way to respond to what your friends post or say, regardless of whether it is text, photo, video or both.

Be heard

Voice chat on Discord is pretty easy. When you enter a voice channel, Discord automatically turns on your mic. You can also access voicechat by creating voice calls, or group calls to your friends by clicking the phone icon from your Friends List.

Discord has some quick controls that you can access from the bottom of the channel window or voice chat window. Clicking on the microphone icon instantly mutes your mic, while clicking on the headphones icon activates "deafen." This kills all Discord incoming sound and mutes your microphone. You can also adjust the audio settings for voicechat and video in Settings. This menu is accessed by clicking on the gear icon. To exit a voice chat or voice channel on a server, you must hit the "hang up", which is a phone that has an arrow pointing downward.

Control what you see and hear

It doesn't make sense to share a server with everyone. Discord has all the social media-style features that allow you to control how you interact with people. Right-clicking a person's name on the server list prompts a drop-down with a number of options, such as sending a private message, adding the person to your friend list, initiating a voice call, and muting or blocking them. You can even adjust another user's volume on your end if they're too loud. Muting a user means you don't hear their voice in a voice chat, but they can still hear you. Blocking someone prevents you from seeing their text messages; however, you will still hear them if you're both in the same voice chat.

When you're an admin on a server - either because you created it or because the admin of a server you're on gave you that power - you have even more control over undesirable people hanging around. Right-clicking names allows you to disable users' ability to hear other users or ban them from a particular server.

Go Live

Discord also has a feature called Go Live, which server owners can enable to allow users stream live gameplay to other Discord users. To "Go Live", users must click the Go Live button located at the bottom of your screen when connected via voice chat. Once you click the Go Live button, you will be able to select the game and start streaming it. Go Live can also be used to share your screen with a specific app. This is useful if you want to watch YouTube videos together.

Once someone or you are streaming through Go Live you will see an indicator beside their name in the voicechat indicating they are live. You can then click the Join Stream link to start watching. Discord allows people stream in 720p (30fps), 1080p (60fps), and 4k (60fps) - the quality of your stream depends on what type of Discord account, e.g. Regular account, Nitro Classic and Nitro are the options.

Discord Nitro

While you can use Discord for free, the app also offers a paid subscription called Discord Nitro. Discord Nitro costs $10 per month or $100 annually. It gives you access to a few additional features, including the ability to use animated emotives, stream in 4K with Go Live, boost servers, and upload larger files.

Each Nitro user gets two boosts by default (though they can always be purchased more), which they can use on any server. Boosts are helpful to servers because, as previously mentioned, they unlock functionality for everyone in the server, therefore allowing server owners to offer an even better experience. There are many features that can be unlocked, including more emotes for the server, improved audio quality for voice chat and the ability to customize the server with animated server icons and graphics, as well as a custom vanity URL to share information with people. Discord has published a support article on server boosts. This article explains the details of server boosts.

Mobile devices

It can be frustrating when you use the same program on different devices, and have completely different layouts. Discord brings everything together using the same layouts and functions on both your laptop and desktop. Even your mobile apps on your tablet and phone will be intuitive to use. You don't have to go to your computer every time you want to update your favorite group chat or gaming server. The mobile app can also video call, initiate voice and start discussions, and locate thousands of servers across this platform. Mobile Discord is the same as Desktop Discord, and they can be accessed from any device. When you're away from your personal device, you can log in to your account via a browser and have immediate access to all of your conversations remotely.

Where can you find Discord?

Discord app.com allows you to access Discord from your computer or mobile device. The app can be downloaded to allow you to use Discord while on the go. There are versions for Android and iOS phones, as well as tablets. Go to theGoogle Play Store or the iTunes App Store to get the right app for your device.
