Minecraft: Java Vs. Bedrock - Which Edition Is Better?

The evolution of Minecraft, a game that has become one of the highest-selling games of all-time, is truly impressive. The game started out as a Java game that could only be played on PC. The game is now playable on a variety of consoles, beyond the Java code.

Minecraft's 2017 Bedrock Edition was released to offer a different way for players to experience the same game. It was built using a completely separate programming language. Of course, that isn't the only difference between the two editions as both provide different reasons to play their versions.



10 Bedrock: Cross-Platform Play Is Available



Bedrock changed Minecraft forever after its release. Players could now play open-world sandboxes with each other across all platforms. The Bedrock edition could be downloaded on Windows 10, and a friend can also download it on Xbox, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. These multiplayer worlds work the same way as regular games, so the game isn't diluted. The only downside is that it will require players to make a Microsoft account in order to access cross-platform multiplayer.



9 Java: Access More Servers



The Java edition was created years before its counterpart. This means that the Minecraft community has a stronger foundation than the older version. Because of this, there are simply more worlds to access in the Java edition because of the vast amount of public servers that are available to play on. Sure, there are some that have made the complete leap from Java to Bedrock. But simply put, it is much easier as of this time for players to find a server that they would enjoy in the Java edition of the game.



8 Bedrock: Multiplayer Is Easier To Set Up



Java's private multiplayer server functionality has improved over time. But, Bedrock makes it so much easier to have a hang-out with your friends. Players can join each other's games by simply being friends on their Microsoft accounts.

Split-screen multiplayer can also be provided on consoles. This allows players to play locally. Java requires players to set up a server either through port-forwarding, purchasing a realm server, or through LAN. Two copies of Minecraft are required.



7 Java: Two Crucial Modes Exist



There are many ways to play Minecraft. Players can choose to play survival mode or creative mode. The adventure mode is for map creators who do not want players to destroy their work. Two modes are only available in Java. One is a survival mode, where players are forced to survive at the most difficult difficulty level with only one life. There's also spectator mode which allows players to view their world from a distance. They can fly through blocks, and see through the eyes or specific entities.

6 Bedrock: Parents Have Greater Control



Over the years, Minecraft's audience has become more diverse. The game doesn't have many parental controls, so little kids can join servers with teens and adults. Java Edition especially doesn't come with anything parents can do to restrict their child. Bedrock provides at least some outlet. Parents can set up their child’s Microsoft account to prevent them from accessing multiplayer.



5 Java: More World Generation Options



Java edition offers more world generation options than the other game modes. Both versions allow players to create a normal world or super flat world. A few Java-exclusive world types are available. The amplified world allows players to generate terrain as high as the world's height limit. The "Large Biomes” type allows players to choose one biome for their world. There are even some customizable worlds that can be created using JSON.



4 Bedrock: A Smoother Experience Playing



Minecraft on Java edition can still have lag spikes despite being a game that moves as far as possible away from hyperrealistic graphics. Bedrock edition has somehow avoided this issue, likely because it is a game that is built completely with a different language.

This edition runs off an engine that is separate to the game. Java edition doesn’t have that structure. It relies on all of its parts for proper functioning without optimizations.



3 Java: Experiencing Mods Come Easier



Mods are always a major part of the Minecraft experience, with some mods looking to aesthetically enhance the game and some looking to add more content. Java is the best place to get mods in Minecraft. Bedrock edition had the modding API. Bedrock offers add-ons that can be purchased from the Minecraft Marketplace. However installing mods on Java edition is free. There are many mods that players can use, and Bedrock is only restricted to the ones being sold.



2 Bedrock: Combat is More Straight Forward



Hardcore Minecraft fans will remember the day 1.9 was released, when combat in Java Edition changed for the better. Players needed to get used to fighting monsters and other players with the addition of cooldowns between hits and Hotbar item switches. This was a major frustration in the community. However, the Bedrock Edition does not have this feature and still uses the old combat system. PVP-loving players could wait for Mojang to work out the combat issues in Java, or switch versions.



1 Java: Customization is possible through the Roof



The Minecraft Marketplace in Bedrock has something very nice. There are theme packs available for players to test out skins and textures. But why pay for them when Java Edition allows you to get more of these items for free? Once again, Java edition simply has more to offer in terms of creativity as players can scour the entire internet for different texture packs or skins to use. Players can even create their own skins if they wish. The possibilities are endless.
