How To Setup A Simple Minecraft Server

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home networks configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. Minecraft Servers Minecraft Realms has a small, private server that you can buy for your friends. If you still wish to set up your own private server, do so at your own caution as we cannot offer support for home networks or privately made servers.

Here is a guide to help you create a server so your friends can join and play together!

Java must be installed on the computer hosting the server in order to run.jar files. 1. Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file (The X's will be the current version number) 2. After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it "Minecraft Server". 3. Drag and copy the.jar file into your Minecraft Server folder.

4. Open the command prompt from your start menu while you have the file browser open.

5. You can verify if Java is installed at command prompt by typing "java –version" without quotes

6. To start the Minecraft Server, you will need change the directory location to the one where the Minecraft Server folder and.jar file are located.

7. You can find the directory in Windows by simply clicking on the browser directory in file browser here. (Your personalization settings will affect the color and theme of your file browser.) Copy this address into your clipboard.

8. Type without quotes "cd" hit space and then paste the address you just copied, then hit enter.- This should look like "cd C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server"

9. After entering the directory, type the following manually into your command prompt without quotes.jar

10. After pressing Enter, you will receive an error message about the failed to load properties and failed eula.txt. Do not panic, as you will need to rerun the command after we have configured these files.

11. Back in the Minecraft Server folder open the "eula.txt' file that has been created with your text editor. Here you will need to set the eula=false to eula=true and save.

12. If you don't see a server.properties file, right-click the file and click "Open With" or "More Apps" if Windows 10 is your operating system. Scroll down and choose your text editor/notepad. If you do not want this step to be repeated every time you edit a.properties file it is advisable to keep the box stating "Always open this app to edit.properties" intact.

13. Here you will be met with many settings so we will be focusing on the core ones to get your server running. Pay attention to the query.port setting. This is the port that you need to forward to your local router in order to allow other inbound connections.

14. You can set the gamemode to survival or creative. Specify what you would like by typing after the "=".

Spawn protection is the limit of the blocks that can't be broken within the server spawn radius. If you do not want them to break, you can change this value from 0 to 1.

15. The allow_nether option indicates if you would like the nether to be on your server.

Server difficulty can be set by difficulty. This can be either peaceful, easy, normal, or hard.

16. The pvp setting determines if you want players to be able to hurt one another.

17. Max-players indicates the maximum number players who can join your servers. You may want to adjust this to how much RAM you have dedicated to your server.

18. If you have one, the level-seed lets you insert a seed into the world.

Motd is the message that Minecraft server browser displays to other players once you have been added to their list.

Now you just have to rerun the launch command in the command prompt and the server should be running! Repeat steps 8-9 to launch the server again.

Make sure you are in Minecraft Server's file directory. Next, enter java-jar "your name".jar into the command prompts

You can find more information about the settings of the server.properties.file here. Scroll down to "Java Edition".

You will also have to forward the port in server.properties query.port. It defaults to 25565, so you will need to set it up in your router settings. This process can vary between different router manufacturers. If you need assistance with forwarding a port please refer to your router’s help site/manual.

If you do not specify anything in server-ip settings, the server will point at default to your public address. This will allow other players to connect to the server and play with your server.

You can find your public IP by simply typing in your search browser: "What is my public IP?" Make sure to look for IPv4 IP addresses. These IP addresses only contain numbers and have only three decimals.

Once you have your public IP, we STRONGLY urge you to not give it out publicly and advertise with it as giving your public IP out publicly is a security risk to your home network. Only give your IP out to people you trust and would love to play with.
