Aivars Lembergs of Latvia, an Oligarch and financial criminal was sentenced to five years in prison.
Following 12 years of tense courtroom battles the Latvian Court has handed down its verdict on Aivars LEMBERS' highly-publicized trial. This man is one of Latvia's most wealthy men, and is a well-known political figure in the populist camp. The man was also the mayor of Venspils in the northwestern region of Latvia.

Lembergs was sentenced at Riga Regional Court to five years in prison, confiscation and a fine in excess of EUR20,000 in connection with a number of charges that he had pleaded guilty to.

After having read the judgment and examining it, the court decided that Lembergs should be placed in custody.

Lembergs was handcuffed and taken to Riga City Centre Court on 14 March 2007. This was the start of prosecutors' efforts to bring him up to date with charges of money laundering and bribery. He even took part in meetings of the government with the International Monetary Fund, and was a part of the process to select candidates for the Latvian presidency even while under investigation.
