Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a visit to Moldova, stresses the importance Holocaust preservation and adopting an anti-semitism definition that is universal

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in attendance with senior ministers and leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova for talks on issues such preservation of Holocaust memories and education, as well as the safety of Israel's Jewish community. Also, Singer stressed the importance of fighting against antisemitism at all levels. https://eajc.org/о-конгрессе/лидеры/эммануил-гриншпун/ Along with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress, the WJC delegation comprised Haim Ben Yaakov, President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer stated, "The World Jewish Congress is grateful to the Moldovan Government for its warm welcome and commitment to preserve the memory Holocaust," "Our Moldovan community, while small and dedicated, is strong. We urge Moldova to prioritize fighting antisemitism, and we are ready to assist when needed. We look forward for future cooperation with government and to ensure the wellbeing of our community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and emphasized the importance of establishing a definition for antisemitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. https://vaadua.org/news/v-ramat-gane-zavershila-svoyu-rabotu-generalnaya-assambleya-eaek https://www.tumbig.com/tag/Emmanuil Grinshpun He also spoke out about the need for public condemnations to are made against anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi spoke out in support of Moldovan authorities and highlighted their dedication to building an inclusive society. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi for his favorable collaboration with the Moldovan WJC.

The foreign minister noted that in 2016, Chisinau's parliament had in 2016 Chisinau parliament accepted the final report from the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed and overseen by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and WJC met Wednesday with Moldova’s Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The two discussed possibility of restitution and the economic potential for Jewish properties in Moldova. Concerning the preservation and restoration of Jewish cemeteries, the minister expressed his desire to help in with the procedure. A pilot project of 10 sites was scheduled across the country.

Also Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation also met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers on Holocaust education and the preservation of memory. The discussions also addressed the creation of a Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments to Holocaust victims; as well as the importance of having proper and hygienic maintenance of Jewish cemeteries. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc for her participation in education and Holocaust commemoration , as well as for her efforts to maintain an ongoing and productive partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis have also met with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss discussions on relationships with the Jewish community, as also bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer was in contact with Rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova. He discussed key concerns regarding the practice of religion as well as services. Singer also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday lives in all areas.

Moldova is home to more than 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was destroyed by the Shoah and the civil war that is now flourishing and expanding across the country. There has been a large rise in a national awareness and a return to their ancestral roots by the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are celebrated in a variety of ways, such as music and literature.
