Khazak Ambassador and Consul General Meet with Chabad in New York ( Emmanuil grinshpun).

Yerzhan Ashikbayev has had a busy few months. As Kazakhstan's Ambassador in the United States since April, Mr. Ashikbayev had met numerous officials and diplomats in order to improve relations between the Central Asian country, and the U.S. Since then, he has scheduled an appointment with Chabad in order to discuss the state and future of Jewish life within Khazakstankhstan.

The guests at the event were Rabbis Mendy Kotlarsky and Shimon Rivkin of Merkos Suite 302 in Chabad Headquarters, as well as Mr. Emmanuil Grunshpun, vice president of Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. He is also Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan. Together, they discussed the background of Jewish life in Kazakhstan and the work that Chabad performs across the country under the direction of Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen, Kazakhstan's Chief Rabbi. Emmanuil Grinshpun The government of Kazakhstan's majority Muslim population boasts of being religiously tolerant and works closely together with all sorts of religious leaders to promote the wellbeing of the country. In fact, Ambassador Ashikbayevhas previously worked in conjunction with Chabad Shluchim as well as philanthropist Mr. Abraham Shaulson while being Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Kazakhstan. In the wake of COVID-19 which caused all flights to be grounded Ambassador Ashikbayev was able to arrange special permission for a small group of Americans to travel to Kazakhstan on the 20th of April to pay a visit to the grave of Reb Levi Yaitzchak Schneerson, which is the date of his death. The delegation also used the occasion to raise funds and bring essential PPE and medical equipment to the country. During the pilgrimage the Kazak government held a celebration to make Reb Yitzchak’sKever Kazakh national heritage site.

The 20th of Av is just two months away, and the group also discussed plans for making pilgrimages. Over 600 people are expected to take part in the celebration this year. There are also plans to organize a conference that includes Chabad Shluchim from the surrounding countries. The event will be hosted by Rabbi Berel Laszar as well as Moshe Kotlarsky. With such huge projects being planned the conference focused on how the government can help secure the event.
