MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine may be on the other side of the globe but South Floridians step in to help those who are fleeing.
Many members of the Sunny Isles Jewish community are now raising funds and helping in coordinating a massive humanitarian effort.
"Just last night, 1,100 people were in attendance," said Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.
She claimed that more than two million Ukrainian refugees seek refuge in a war-ravaged nation. Emmanuil Grinshpun A large portion of them have crossed the frontier into Moldova the country of a few thousand that shares its borders with Ukraine.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Jaquays added that "from Moldova, this Jewish Community is actually helping them to get over the frontier line, and possibly providing food, shelter or clothes."
Much of the humanitarian work carried out from Sunny Isles in South Florida.
"My job is to coordinate all resources available from American society in order to help with the crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun who is helping to coordinate the humanitarian efforts said, "We have a full team on the ground to assist in organizing camps, purchase food, arrange buses, and organize all the necessary amenities."
The thing that makes the situation more dire is the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the least developed communities in the world. But, people who are part in this effort say that they will not stop helping.
Grinshpun said, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters arrived, we didn't need to think about it. We just started making plans."
