Confusion. Mixing format, building and construction, thesis, structure, or viewpoints results in the reader being confused. Also not following the guidelines for the category can lead to readers who anticipate specific components that are missing or misused. Having the mechanics correct is a must.

Excessive exposition at the start. We have a brief (pun planned) time to catch the attention of a reader. For that reason, an author needs to "hook" the reader immediately. Beginning with some action is one great strategy. If action can't be utilized at the very beginning, then have some within the very first three or 4 (and that's extending it) paragraphs.

The succinct, to the point, best definition I have developed for a narrative is AN CONCEPT WITH CONSEQUENCES. A short story should begin with a single idea and explore it in some way. It should not dig excessive into setting, plot, or character. It must simply concentrate on a single idea and the consequences of that concept.

There is something I call 'reader investment' that applies when considering the perfect length for stories with a twist. In book length pieces, readers become firmly attached to character and the trend of the story. To disrupt or breach all that at the end with a twist, which denies all that, can be frustrating and even worrisome for numerous readers. (The Sting, is a skillful and noteworthy exception.) In shorter pieces the reader financial investment does not get a chance to configure itself, so the twist doesn't interfere with the reader and, in truth, will usually be enjoyed as an unpredicted delight.
