Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, has halted NFT integrations on Wednesday as it believes NFTs have a speculative aspect and a high risk of exclusion, and fraud are in violation of the game's rules.

While the NFT community was highly dissatisfied with the move, crypto-skeptic gamers were overwhelmingly positive.

The company of Sweeney is the one behind the development of the highly successful battle royale game Fortnite and is considered to be a Metaverse-based platform. While Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO has said the company doesn't intend to impose any opinions regarding the subject to its players:

Developers should be able to decide how to build their games, and you should be free to decide whether to play them. I believe that stores and operating system makers shouldn't be interfering by imposing their opinions on other players. We certainly won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgements, but NFTs aren't currently within their jurisdiction.

He said that a shop could make no such decisions and accept any legal game and draw the line between accepted norms and what we do, or allow games that conform to the owner's personal opinions.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project dubbed NFT Worlds with a huge issue to resolve, given that it was built on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

Play-to-earn (P2E), a community-driven platform for play-to-earn (P2E) is home to an entire NFT and crypto-based ecosystem built around. Its NFTs generate 51,000 Ether (ETH) which is $80.8 million worth trading volume at the time. However the NFT floor price has fallen from 3.33 Ethereum down to 1.01 ETH since the news broke. While its native token WRLD fell 55% in that time period.

The NFT Worlds team said that it is currently "brainstorming" solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team stated that they are in touch with Minecraft to find solutions. If not, a shift to a "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been discussed as possible alternatives.
