How To Begin Composing A Mystery Novel
What about word count? The range I gave, 1500-7500 words, is not by any means a basic thing. At the low end, somebody someplace will make the argument for your story being 'flash fiction'. At the high end, you begin entering the grey location of a novella. What actually counts is what your publisher says. That is what a brief story is if you are attempting to get a story into a magazine that defines a brief story as 1000-5000 words. You don't get a say. But still, different magazines have different standards. So again, wiggle room.

Do not be frightened to use other people's stories. I do not suggest plagiarizing but I suggest listening. Just listen to what people are stating. The stories individuals have can be very fascinating and can be excellent subjects for your short stories.
