Worlds of Warcraft collide: Blizzard plans huge merger of WoW servers


Blizzard plans on combining low-populated WoW servers and active realms to increase the amount of engagement.
Blizzard is planning to announce a massive-scale global combination of its World of Warcraft servers in order to sustain an active player base.



Blizzard desires all its WoW servers be as full as they can. This is due to active servers leading to higher engagement (and monetization). The devs are trying to eliminate any distinctions between realms by combining low-populated servers with high-populated ones.

This isn't the first time Blizzard has done something similar to this. It's not the first time Blizzard has done this. In the past, realms have been joined repeatedly. The move could be triggered due to lower than expected player numbers, subscriber numbers or even general monetization. The migrations have been a huge success and had a dramatic effect on overall play, including raids and questions.



"We have completed a thorough study of the realm population for each realm in the world. We'll be connecting low-population realms to other realms in the next two to three months. This will be done during scheduled maintenance. Each week we will connect a few realms until we have connected all low-population realms within each region to a larger population ," Blizzard announced this in an update.



These mergers also open up the possibility to the new WoW Shadowlands expansion, which will launch in 2020.



The crossovers are scheduled to start in a few months' time , and Blizzard assures that it will be an automated process.
