If you keep a close eye on the App Store (or have an RSS feed to follow it), you might have seen an app dubbed Minecrafted there on Monday morning. It's an Minecraft client for iOS which is a version of the extremely popular indie game that can played on an iPhone and also connect to real Minecraft servers. Do not rush to download it. The application has been removed from the App Store and you'll get an error message if you try to locate it on the US store.
What's the issue? TUAW reached out to Trevor Wilkin, the app's creator. He explained that the original idea was for the client to be created, submitted to Apple and then ratified by Minecraft before it went live. Apple removed it from the market immediately, and Wilkin claims that he "pretty much freaked out and removed from sale as quickly as I possibly could." He doesn't know whether the app is genuine or not -- it's entirely original, according to the description, but probably he reverse-engineered a few things, because it's compatible with current servers and versions of the game.
Wilkin is a likable and innocent man to us. Wilkin claims he doesn't wish to hurt the brand, but wanted to provide an effective tool. I hope to find a solution that doesn’t put anyone at risk. We're hoping that too. having Minecraft running in a legal manner on iOS is a welcome benefit for iPhone owners and those who love the incredibly popular game.
