Tate Gallery Teams up With Minecraft

Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter

21 November 2014

The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most renowned works in 3D within the virtual world of Minecraft. Is this a great method to appreciate art?

Have you ever thought about entering a painting and doing some exploration?

The Tate invites visitors to climb over its works and browse.

There will be no security guards watching.

It has teamed up to the Minecraft creators - an online computer game where millions of people take their time to create worlds of fantasy block-by-block - to create 3D versions of two of its paintings for the form of a virtual gallery.

Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London, and Christopher Nevinson's depiction of New York, Soul of the Soulless City (1920), are the first pair to receive this digital, 3D overhaul.

"Visitors will see a white cube which represents the Tate Gallery," explains Jane Burton, Creative Director of Tate Media.

"You walk in with the painting in your hand.

"What you can do is walk right up to the painting, and then literally dive into it You jump into it, and that's where your adventure begins."

Enter the art

Visitors are able to interact with the world of the painting.

To get a glimpse of Nevinson's cityscape from the train, you can take it. Take a break for lunch as you wait for construction workers to finish the tall buildings.

Visitors should be cautious about pirates on the Thames when visiting Derain's photo. They can also experiment with explosive paint pigments.

"You explore activities and challenges that are related to the themes of the artwork.

"It's art, history, and adventure," says Jane Burton, whose children introduced her to the magic of Minecraft.

Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, originally suggested that Minecraft exhibits be created.

He suggested the idea for Tate's IK Prize, which is awarded to an idea that utilizes digital technology to inspire people with the arts.

Tate utilized the skills of other famous Minecraft builders, like Featherblade, Featherblade, Dragnoz and Featherblade to create the worlds inspired from the famous photographs.

But not everyone is convinced.

Perspective

These Minecraft creations will provide younger audiences a greater understanding of artworks so that they can see original works in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it's like "seeing an old friend".

This feeling of recognition, "like seeing celebrities" is a powerful tool for art appreciation and encouraging viewers.

She continues, "But ironically the Minecraft works themselves provide a more enjoyable experience."

"It feels more like entertainment than a meaningful connection to the painting, as 3D mapping in Minecraft replaces the real painting's illusionistic surface by doing the work for me."

Digital opening

You can download the two works of Derain and Nevinson beginning Monday

Players pay a fee to join the Minecraft community, however the maps available for download of Tate's images are free.

With six more 3D masterpieces in the pipeline viewers will be watching with interest to see how big the lines are on Monday when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
