Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Hands-on

The Warcraft universe has instant appeal to millions of people around the world and it's not a surprise that Blizzard is expecting great things from Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft which is a digital collectible card game. The company recently turned its hand to James Cullinane.



The games industry seems to be no less prone to synchronicity than other creative endeavor. In a single moment, everyone is coming to the same conclusion that the time is finally right for digital collectible games. Where once we were limited to the walls of the annual Magic: The Gathering videogames and now, in addition to the numerous Kickstarters, we also have Scrolls, the next game by Minecraft studio Mojang, and Hearthstone which is a collectible cards game from Blizzard.



Hearthstone, an online card game that is free to play, is based on the popular Warcraft universe. The concept behind the game is that players gather in one of Warcraft's many Inns to rest and compete in friendly competition. The game shares World of Warcraft's vibrant colors and a cartoonish aesthetic. The game lets players choose from nine heroes or decks that are based on the World of Warcraft's classes and each with a different kind of gameplay.



Each player receives a deck of cards made up of creatures, items and spells, all built on the Warcraft universe - which they are able to play dependent on the casting value and available mana crystals. Hearthstone is, unlike other games of collectible cards, does not place a lot of emphasis on resource management. Instead, players can get one mana crystal more per round, which is replenished every round.



Each class also comes with unique abilities that the player can choose to use or cast each turn. For example the warlock has a life tap, which allows the player to trade two health to get another card, while the priest can cast +2 health on any of his creatures, or himself. Heroes can also carry weapons to attack their enemies directly.



Players aren't able to designate a unit that will block an attacking unit. Creatures that have Taunt must be killed and attacked first; otherwise , it's an open-for-all. Creatures can even ignore an opponent's creatures and attack the opponent directly. This increases the speed at which a hand of Hearthstone is played out significantly.



Altogether it signifies that Hearthstone is a breeze to learn and understand however, it is also rapidly increasing.



Although Hearthstone's gameplay may be unique It differs from other digital or digital collectible card games because it has unique features. It really shines in card accumulation, deck building, and creation. Players can take on simple daily quests , for which they'll receive booster packs, or they are available for purchase.

Anyone who has played StarCraft II will also recognise that Blizzard's matchmaking capabilities on Battle.net are the best in the business, meaning that once the game is launched it is highly unlikely that players will be matched with opponents who they don't stand a chance against. Most importantly, Hearthstone's booster pack system, its deck-building and its crafting are already coming together as an ensemble that can outdo the competition.
