Minecraft has definitely gained popularity over the last decade or since its release in 2009 / 2010 - it's been one of the most successful games of all time in terms of sales and possibly in terms of influence.
Despite this, I feel that the newer versions do not have the same feel as the older versions (Beta 1.7.3 or earlier). They're both fantastic, I'm not going to lie. But, I believe they're two totally different products that cannot be compared.
Modern Minecraft versions feel more like RPGs in my mind, sacrificing some of the loneliness the Alpha and Beta versions had you feel. The older versions don't have as many tasks, which means you'll need to be able to think on your feet to have fun. Twitsoc In the newer versions though, there seems (could be wrong though) to be a few set tasks that you have to do (like collect food for the constantly-decreasing hunger bar), so you'd usually always have something to do because the game's told you that you have to do it (if that makes any sense)!
My Experience
I am a player of NSSS, ClassiCube, or AlphaPlace for the majority of the time.
ClassiCube
ClassiCube is an open-source recreation of Minecraft Classic 0.30 developed for more modern usage and written in C and available on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, browser and even Android (although it's still in beta). When you launch the game into Singleplayer mode you're immediately thrown into a 0.30-style map, featuring 0.30-style menus and 0.30-style blocks (same textures and block behaviours). This version 0.30 is updated for the latest operating systems (and without the need to depend on older versions of Java), and features a new level format, dramatically improved performance, and an entirely new block style.
But the fun starts when you go into the SMP (multiplayer) mode. While some servers are still just 0.30 nostalga servers. Many are using the new Classic+Hax and Enhanced game modes, in which a lot of small and big quality-of life improvements have been bestowed unto us, including flight noclip, custom block and more.
