Here's an example to illustrate how the least squares method works:
Suppose we have a set of data that consists of two variables: x (the independent variable) and y (the dependent variable). We want to find the line of best fit for this data, which will allow us to make predictions about y based on different values of x.
To do this, we can use the least squares method. First, we specify a linear regression model that describes the relationship between x and y. The model will have the form y = a*x + b, where a and b are the parameters of the model that we want to estimate.
Next, we use the least squares method to find the values of a and b that minimize the sum of the squares of the differences between the observed values of y and the predicted values of y based on the model. In other words, we try to find the values of a and b that make the model predictions as close as possible to the observed data.
Once we have found the values of a and b that minimize the sum of the squares, we can use these values to make predictions about y based on different values of x. We can also use the model to understand the relationship between x and y, as the value of a represents the slope of the line of best fit and the value of b represents the y-intercept.
