Invasion of Phnom Penh

The Invasion of Phnom Penh took place on January 7, 1979, when Vietnamese forces seized the Cambodian capital, overthrowing the brutal regime of Pol Pot. The Khmer Rouge, led by the French-educated Saloth Sar, later referred to as Pol Pot, ordered the extermination of intellectuals, and even the wearing of glasses was illegal. The regime was so brutal that between one and three million people were killed.

In response, the CPP-led government implemented a crackdown on the CNRP and its leadership, claiming that they were working with the United States to topple the Cambodian government. The CNRP was forced out of many government posts and 55 seats in the National Assembly following a November ruling by the Supreme Court. The Cafe Techno resulted in the holding of national elections under the supervision of the UN in July 1993, which were arguably the first in the country's history.

Problems with the Techno-Cafe

When the Techno-Cafe first opened, students had a lot of adjusting to do. They liked the facilities and would sit in them for a few minutes before moving back to their old labs and typing on their computers.
