Minecraft Dungeons Review - Hours of Fun For Locked-down Families

Minecraft Dungeons review - hours of entertainment for locked-down families

Mojang Studios; Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One (version tested)

This retro-tinged hack-and-slash spinoff has plenty of Mojang humor and character as well as adorable references to the original Minecraft

When the idea of making a Minecraft spinoff was first tossed around at Mojang Studios, a dungeon crawler game had to have been one of the first ideas. From Gauntlet to Diablo, this genre has always featured dank subterranean lairs, treasure chests and warrior skeletons, all of which are loved Minecraft components. Addictgaming The distinctive blocky graphics work well, ensuring that Minecraft Dungeons will look familiar to players as they whirl through dioramas of hack and slash fun that reorganize themselves every time you play.

The plot is thin. A vengeful loner discovers an object that transforms him into a powerful mage, and he takes over over the Minecraft kingdom. The game can be played solo however it is more enjoyable to play its co-op mode, which can be enjoyed online or on a console. In this mode, players collaborate to take down waves of skeletons, slime monsters and huge spiders, while reviving fallen allies as they go. With four players participating each with a unique set of weapons, the game is soon awash with arrows, explosions lightning bolts, and freeze rays in a tense but thrilling light show. Gauntlet veterans are familiar with the intricate rhythms of this genre. The anticipation of the next wave and the chaos of battle and then the frenzied loot-collecting are what makes this genre enjoyable.

Fighting can be a bit nimble. There is a button for melee attacks and one for ranged weapons. You start with a simple bow and sword, but soon unlock more powerful weapons such as spears, battle hammers, and crossbows that can fire rapidly. You can also gain enchantments for your weapons, which give them new attacks - a poison cloud or lightning strike, for example. Armour and artefacts can provide special abilities, like healing auras or lasers. The wide array of attacking and defensive options add a rich seam of strategy and planning to the chaos of the levels.

From the very first encounter with a cute archer to the final mega battle against the Arch Illager himself, Minecraft Dungeons is a enjoyable thrill ride through an adventure game. The levels are filled with details, from lush pixelated woodlands to deep red stone caverns that clattering mine carts rush through the narrow tunnels, while torches flicker across the sloping walls. Each level has a distinct route to the finish, but there are numerous side routes to explore, as well as a whole bunch of bosses and baddies including the terrifying Endermen which are accompanied by horror film music and necromancers who create hordes of zombies.

Minecraft Dungeons is alive with an energetic, diverse score, theatrical sound effects, and a myriad of references to the first Minecraft. If you can't find the tiny zombies running at your arms with arms outstretched, or the collectible anthropomorphic keys to the dungeons running away in terror, then consult a sorcerer.

Minecraft Dungeons is not an extremely difficult game. Although you can finish the basics of the game in one evening, increasing difficulty levels will provide you with new and more interesting weapons and items. Plus, as the levels are partly random, they're not always the same when you return, increasing the replay value. Some players might be disappointed that the map for the game displays an area that is not available to purchase.

It's also unfortunate that we don't see the game's main focus on player-generated creativity. Between each level you're returned to your camp for training where you can purchase new items and play with new weapons. It would be nice to be able build your own castle there. As a retro-inspired hack-and-slash jaunt with plenty of Mojang personality and humour, Minecraft Dungeons is a hugely diverting treat that'll give hours of entertainment for locked-down families.
