Under 1900-talet såg massmedierna i Sverige ut på följande sätt:
Radio: Radio började sändas i Sverige redan 1923 och blev snabbt ett av de mest populära massmedierna. På 1950-talet introducerades även TV, som snabbt vann mark i den svenska befolkningen.

TV: TV började sändas i Sverige 1956 och blev snabbt ett av de mest populära massmedierna. På 1970-talet började även svenska TV-kanaler att sända direktsändningar från olika sporter, vilket gjorde att TV också blev viktigt för sportjournalistiken.
Film: Film har funnits i Sverige sedan 1920-talet, men det var först på 1960-talet som svensk film verkligen tog av. Svenska filmer har sedan dess vunnit många priser på internationella filmfestivaler.
