The announcement was made on the official Minecraft website, Peter Sollett, known for his work on Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, will be writing and the director of the feature-length film.
The Minecraft Movie will be about one girl in her teens and a group of unlikely adventurers who must save their blocky world from the evil Ender Dragon. The film is being distributed by Warner Bros. and produced by Mojang AB and Vertigo Entertainment.Loading Play
The Minecraft Movie has been through many changes and starts. Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy, who was also director on Stranger Things, was hired as director in October 2014. However he resigned from project in December 2014 because of differences in the creative process. In July 2015, Rob McElhenney, from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, was announced as the director. However the director also pulled out of the project, which put the film behind schedule. Finally Sollett was named director in January 2019. Steve Carell was also in talks to join the project as the principal voice actor in 2016, though he also left due to scheduling conflicts.
