Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from our community members seeking clarification and clarity regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

As we are in the process of updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more precise guidance on new technologies, we would like to take the opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we would support or allow. Let's take a look!

WHAT IS A NFT?

An NFT is an individual digital token that can't be modified and is usually purchased with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. An NFT can be linked to any digital asset, like an MPEG or GIF. However digital art, such as JPEGs are the most well-known application for an NFT. The purchase of an NFT gives you the certificate that states the ownership of the original digital file. However, any digital file can be copied and deleted or moved. NFTs and blockchain are also associated with speculation, in which prices rise rapidly and, as we've observed, they can fall quickly.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME

If you're a creator who is actively involved in the buying, selling, or trading of NFTs that use Minecraft (like skins or worlds) We strongly recommend you go through the information below. If you don't the above, these changes will not impact your game.

Our MINECRAFT POLICY AND NFTS

In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we outline how a server owner can charge users for access, and that everyone should be able to access the same functions. These rules are in place to ensure Minecraft remains a community that allows everyone access to the same content. NFTs may, however, create scarcity and exclusion models that are not in line with our guidelines and the spirit and purpose of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft game-specific content, such as worlds, skins, personal items, or any other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset. Our reasons follow.

NFT implementations have been introduced by various companies that can be connected to Minecraft world files and skin pack. NFTs and blockchain can also be integrated with Minecraft to create Minecraft collectible NFTs. This allows players to earn NFTs through the performance of tasks on a server, or by earning Minecraft NFT rewards.

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion that is not in alignment with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing with others. NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a situation of the haves and the have-nots. NFTs encourage speculation and profit which we believe is incompatible with long-term joy and success for our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being secure and could cost the customers who buy them. Some third-party NFT implementations are also entirely dependent on blockchain technology and may require an asset manager, who could disappear without notice. There have also been instances where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices. We understand that the process of creating our game has intrinsic value, and we strive to create a platform where those values can be recognized.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a secure and enjoyable experience Blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. It is also not used to create NFTs from any game-related content, including skins and worlds, persona items, or other mods. We will be watching closely the way blockchain technology develops in the future to ensure that the above principles are withheld and determine whether it will provide more secure gaming or other practical and inclusive games. We do not plan to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft in the near future.

We'll be providing more details to you in the near future. We have our guidelines here, but in the meantime, we'll have more to share with you. Keep an eye out!
