Fred Funk's eight-birdie, no-bogey round at the B.C. Open

After a tough week of golf at the U.S. Open, Fred Funk is back in the mix with a solid performance at the B.C. Open. The former world number one had to contend with a bum right knee and was in need of a win to make his Ryder Cup push a reality. But his six-birdie, no-bogey round on Saturday put him in the hunt for his first major win of 2009.

The final round is expected to feature several top-five finishes. After Funk's eight-birdie, no-bogey round on Sunday, Mike Michel shot a five-under 67 and is now at 19-under 197 for the tournament. He can break Gow's course record of 22-under 266, set in 2001. After hitting a birdie on the par-5 12th, Mike Michel matched Gow's birdie and added birdies on Nos. 16 and 18.

Fred Funk's inspiration for the song

A young Fred McLaughlin was inspired to become a professional golfer by his father, Fred Funk. Like many others, he grew up in a modest environment and was not a junior phenom with access to country clubs. His stepfather worked for the Department of Transportation and his mother sewed custom draperies. At the age of twelve, he began working at a golf course in Maryland, helping out with the golf carts and the range. Later, he moved to Washington, DC, and drove a truck as an overnight route manager for the Washington Star.

After working with a sports psychologist to improve his putting, Fred Funk received a book on alcoholism from his brother. Fred Funk was so inspired by his brother that he mailed it to him. It was a gift that he will always remember. He has been a strong supporter of alcoholism and continues to look to him as an inspiration for Tiger Funk. He cites his brother, who also struggled with alcoholism.

Tiger Woods

Both Tiger Woods and Rickie Funk have had their ups and downs during their career as a professional golfer. After several years of battling back and forth, Woods was finally able to end a six-year slump in the Senior Open at Walton Heath, England, with a win. Woods has been a major force on the tour for many years, but he has become a less intimidating opponent.

The second major of the year, the Masters, has been a test for Woods. He had a three-shot lead after the first three rounds. Despite that, the tournament was called after lightning struck the course. Woods was three under through 16 holes and was set up for a win, but he struggled down the stretch, making two bogeys on the 18th green and a birdie putt that would have forced a playoff with DiMarco.

Tiger Woods' influence on Fred Funk

There's no doubt that Tiger Woods has been a huge influence on Fred Funk. The pair recently played a friendly match on the Merrill Lynch Skills Challenge, aiming to hit as many skins as possible. Annika Sorenstam and Fred Funk rubbed elbows with each other, which makes for a very entertaining match. Annika threw in her own witty take on the game, and Fred Funk and Tiger took some of the ribbing as well.

Unlike the USGA study, Fred Funk's perspective spans his entire career, from the early 1970s to the present. The hypothetical graph shows that modern golf balls are longer than they used to be, but at a lower swing speed. That said, Fred Funk's graph would be a more accurate representation of what's happening on the golf course. Learn More would not be quite as revealing as Jack Nicklaus's, but the comparison still makes a lot of sense.
