How to Master the Art of Everyday Negotiations
I have to admit that I invest much of my own time teaching "big-ticket" bargaining during my seminar, "Best Practices in Negotiation," which I conduct at colleges and onsite at organizations.
This is just natural because on an intuitive level we believe we've one of the most threatened when we're negotiating for cars, homes, better compensation, as well as on behalf individuals employers.
But with a closer look on the sheer number of opportunities we've to negotiate, a lot of them involve transactions that fly under the radar, small exchanges at the supermarket and local retailers.
For example, today I tendered two coupons for baby food. These are valuable, offering a dollar off, each. But there's a catch, as I found out yesterday when I handed these phones a very scrutinizing clerk.
I had to buy specific quantities not only of the brand, but of certain sub-brands, such as organic this or that, or vitamin fortified foods.
Talk about picky! Well, I said to him, "No problem. Let's just take away the baby food from my order, and I'll revisit on a later date and obtain the right items."
He would be a little surprised. I didn't buckle under towards the retail prices, and I wasn't frightened of losing face by saying, implicitly, "Look, without coupons, these food types aren't definitely worth the money!"
Today, I came back using a different strategy.
(1) I resolved to forum-shop, which in the law means deciding on the court or judge who's most sympathetic for your cause. In the supermarket, this implies waiting in a "nice" clerk's line.
(2) I decided I'd comply with one of two of the manufacturer's requirements. I would buy the correct number of items, but I would only buy that which you use, the main brands, instead of the exotic sub-brands.
(3) I tendered the coupons in fact of my items were scanned, as opposed to handing these to the clerk, first. Recommended Site of this is slightly different, and in my experience clerks are less meticulous in lawyering the small print if they receive the coupons if the whole order is rung up.
It worked, and the clerk remarked, "Hey, those are excellent coupons!"
No kidding.
If you would like to refine your negotiation skills, make use of common sense to (1) Forum shop, choosing the best negotiation counterpart; (2) Use partial compliance with the apparent deal requirements, but sticking for your ultimate preferences about the major points; and (3) Be sensitive towards the order where you introduce deal points, noting that if the horses have remaining the gate, it's easier for somebody to go using the stampede, as opposed to declaring an incorrect start.
And one more thing: Don't wait until "big ticket" occasions to polish your bargaining skills. Burnish them every day, in each and every way!
