Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building Virtual City

Minecraft player spends two years creating a virtual city By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years developing the virtual world was called Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is constructed out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks. It also contains 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells claims it took him two years to build and that he works up to five hours per week on the project.

The first building he built was a virtual model of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old however believes that Titan City is not a realistic New York model.

"It's inspired by New York," he told the BBC.

"A majority of people believe it's a recreational activity but it's not."

He constructed the city using the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft but has since transferred it to the PC version, which offers, he claims, more construction options.

Mr. Parcells plans to build an airport as well as an arena for sports.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet to energy and architecture."

"I've always liked architecture. I am particularly proud of Victorian-style buildings that are more traditional and less art deco.

"A lot of people drop in to explore the area or help with the construction." Many of them are involved in helping build roads.

While Titan City has been welcomed by all who have visited it, Mr Parcells stated that he has kept his virtual world separate from his actual life.

He said, "I've kept this under the radar for a while. It's sort of like a second existence I'm not able to talk about, but people are starting to find out."

"My parents believe it's cool. I'm guessing they're just happy I don't play it so much."

Microsoft recently signed an agreement to purchase Minecraft Studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

Markus Persson, aka Notch announced that the game had reached 100 million players in February 2014.

After making an initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. However you can purchase in-game items.

The game takes place in a virtual universe comprised of cubes made from various materials. A majority of these materials can be used to build blocks, and some of them can be transformed into usable raw materials such as wood, iron and diamond.

The game is about surviving by using blocks to build a shelter and turning raw materials and combinations of them into items (swords or armour, bows) to help kill the game's numerous monsters.
