The crafting table interface is available in Java Edition.
Crafting is the process of making tools or items, as well as blocks in Minecraft. Crafting involves moving items from an inventory to a grid for crafting and then arranging them according to a recipe. A crafting table is able to access a 3x3 grid and two-by-two crafting grid. You can also create items in the 2x2 grid in the crafting table.

2x2 Crafting grid (inventory)
3x3 Crafting grid (crafting table)
Players playing Creative, [Bedrock Edition onlySurvival, Adventure, or Spectator[Java Edition only] always have access to the 2x2 grid of crafting from their inventory screen. Small crafting recipes that are at least 2x2 are possible to make. These include crafting tables and sticks and crafting boards, torches, and other shapeless items. To create items using a 3x3 grid make a table for crafting with four planks of wood and place it in the world and then press use while facing it. The interface will appear with a 3x3 crafting grid that players can use for crafting any recipe for crafting within the game. You can also find every crafting recipe in the recipe book.
Some recipes do not require the ingredients to be arranged in a specific manner on the grid of crafting. These are often referred to as non-shapeless recipes. For example, players can make a fermented eye by placing the ingredients anywhere within the grid. [note 1]
However some recipes require ingredients are placed in the right places on the crafting grid. These are also known as shaped recipes. Shaped recipes allow ingredients to be moved upwards or downwards either left or right or both. They can also be turned side-ways. A 3x1 recipe such as bread can be made with the top, middle, and bottom rows of the 3x3 grid. However, it is not possible to make using the 2x2 grid since it needs to be three items wide, and bows can be made with the strings placed on the left rather than on the right.
Certain recipes cannot be moved or mirrored in this manner. These are generally referred to as fixed recipes. For instance, dyes used in banner recipes have to be precisely placed to create the desired pattern. [Bedrock Edition only] Data packs and mods are able to add fixed recipes.
In contrast to other actions in the game such as smelting, brewing, and creating, crafting is completely silent.

Shapeless recipes are noted on this wiki with the arrows of a pair that are intertwined on the table of crafting graphic. This symbol does not actually appear in the game. Recipe Book[]
The recipe book is a mechanism in Minecraft that serves as a recipe book and as a crafting guide. It shows every crafting recipe the player has the ingredients for.
There are many ways to organize recipes for crafting like the following:
- The first tab contains all unlocked recipes. The second tab contains weapons, armor, tools, and other materials. The third tab contains building materials. The fourth tab is filled with food and miscellaneous things. The fifth tab contains redstone items. Recipe system[System for Recipes[
Recipes, such as crafting recipes, can be customized by data packs in Java Edition or add-ons in Bedrock Edition. There are currently 379 crafting recipes available as of 1.16.

To reduce space, certain recipes are animated (requires JavaScript). This wiki categorizes recipes that are not shapeless by putting a pair of intertwined interconnected arrows on its crafting table graphic. Recipes that are fixed for crafting are marked by an exclamation mark. These symbols are not used in the game.
