How can you acquire a pair of Minecraft capes, you are asking? There have been rumors, whispers of a mythical piece of cloth that is worn on the shoulders of the most elite Minecraft players. Legends tell of a multitude of Minecraft caps that were handed to the most fortunate players over the years. Word on the block (sigh) is that capes alter the appearance of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found in the end of ships, since they share the same area on a player's back. It's not a surprise that Minecraft capes are sought after, but it has been difficult to find them.



Each year, a new color and design was presented to attendees of any Minecon event prior to Minecon Earth 2017. More rare are the personal capes given to lucky people as a token of appreciation of their achievements, such as Reddit user u/billyk_ who received a personalized turtle cape for suggesting Mojang should add turtles to Minecraft.



If you're unable to come up with a suggestion that is as good as turtles or that can travel back to the past of Minecon it isn't possible to get any of these Minecraft caps in the Java edition. They're more popular in the Bedrock version, as a few skin packs on the Marketplace include them. If you'd like to have them free, you can test on a cape with the help of Minecraft mods, but it'll only be visible to you. The Java edition only has one available Minecraft cape, so keep reading to learn how to obtain it.





Get a Minecraft cape by migrating your account

In a blog post published in 2020, Mojang announced that it is migrating all Minecraft Java edition accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a requirement change. If you don't change your account when it comes time you'll not be able to play Minecraft until you use the launcher.



However, if you log into Minecraft with your Microsoft account, you'll get a brand new cape. New Minecraft accounts are automatically registered with Microsoft instead of Mojang.

How to activate Minecraft capes

You can wear your official Minecraft cape prior to starting the game if you own one. Your capes Bedrock caps are only available in that version. The same applies to any capes you earn in the Minecraft Java version.



For the Bedrock version start the app and then click the button to open the Dressing Room from the main menu. Then, click the tab on the left with a red cape with the Mojang logo. This will display all available capes. Select one to equip.



To play the Java version, you'll must open the Launcher and then click Minecraft: Java Edition on the left-hand side of the screen. The menu will show a few options at the top including Skins. To see all your skins, select this option. You can modify the existing skin or create a new one from this page. When you click on the option to select a Skin File, you will see all the available caps.





Minecraft mods let you make the cape.

What if your avatar needs an outfit and you don't want to shell out for the free cape of migration? You can make your own cape using mods. Mods like the Advanced Capes Mod make it possible to obtain any of the most sought-after capes in the game or any cape you can think of.



There's a caveat: other players you meet on multiplayer Minecraft servers will not be able to view your cape unless they also have the same mods installed. Waiting for official Mojang capes to be handed to you when your account moves is the best way to make sure everyone can see your cape.
