This is a Brand new Project

Over on Kickstarter scientist and science communication expert Neil deGrasse Tyson has a crowdfunding campaign running with the aim of funding a unique type of computer game. The title is "Space Odyssey" and the team behind it hopes to create an experience that is educational and enjoyable about physics, biology and space.



Players will learn what goes into vehicle and robot design as they design their own unique machines. In an open-world "sandbox" design they'll discover alien worlds, some of which may even have life. A player could be able to pilot a ship through an asteroid belt or designing the next-generation robot capable of mining comets for valuable resources. The team is planning to integrate virtual reality experiences in addition placing players at the middle of the action. In addition to Neil deGrasse Tyson are such famous scientists and experts in science and communication, including rocket scientist Loretta Falcone Cosmologist Janna Levin astrophysicist Charles Liu, planetary scientist Carolyn Porco, astronomer Amy Mainzer and former astronaut Mike Massimino and science communicator Bill Nye. He has also invited authors like Neil Gaiman, Larry Niven, Peter Beagle and George R. R. Martin to join him on the creative world-building aspect. The project is backed by a wide range of artists, scientists gamers, game designers, and other notable people in the scientific and creative fields.



While this is a brand-new project, it's not the first computer game that is educational in nature. chakribakri From classics from the past like "Oregon Trail" to modified versions of the game "Minecraft," game designers and educators have long recognized the benefits of of teaching through play. However, Tyson's game – the full title is "Neil deGrasse Tyson Presents: Space Odyssey - The Video Game" It appears like it's a particularly innovative creation.



The Kickstarter campaign, with its goal of raising $314,159 (a seemingly insignificant amount until you consider the pi numbers) is set to end on Saturday, July 29. The project's administrators acknowledge that the funds will be a small part of what the developers at Whatnot Entertainment will need to make "Space Odyssey" real. But if all goes well it could be soon in a position to explore new worlds from the comfort of your home.
