'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little more than one year after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30, 2021, to play the augmented reality game before Microsoft shuts its servers and makes it no longer available to download through app marketplaces.

Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus epidemic and the changes to daily life that it's brought. "Minecraft Earth was designed around the freedom of movement and collaboration which have become near impossible in the current global situation," the studio said. Mojang, like Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible at home. It's clear that these tweaks weren't enough.

After many exciting adventures, we've made the difficult decision to shut down Minecraft Earth in June 2021. We're grateful for all your support and today's final build has a number of tweaks to make these last months as enjoyable as we can:

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) on January 5, 2021. But there's an upside to today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in a stylish manner. The studio has released a final update to Minecraft Earth. It includes changes that "make your time on Minecraft Earth more fun." This update also eliminates real-money transactions and drastically reduces the time it takes to build and craft items in the game. It also gives players the chance to look at all the content Mojang was working on before today's announcement. The studio stated that they are hoping that the changes will allow players to explore, create and share more while remaining safe indoors.

After June 30th comes and goes, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. If you spent money in Minecraft Earth at any point during the duration of the game, you'll be given a token that will allow you to download the Bedrock edition of Minecraft on your mobile device. More information about the shut-down on the Minecraft website.

This is a disappointing ending for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. When we first the game in action at WWDC 2019, it was clear that Microsoft was optimistic about the game. It's not a good sign for consumer AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to beat the virus using all the resources of Microsoft.

"We're forever thankful for the talent of the Minecraft community," Mojang said. "This was not an easy decision. We're doing everything we can to ensure that you get the most value from Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
