Coronavirus: Leicester Church Uses Minecraft to Teach Bible to Teens

Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teenagers

17 May 2020

A church has turned to Minecraft to teach its youngsters about Christianity during the lockdown.

Leicester's St John the Baptist Church has been recreated on a server, so the youth group has a place to hold Bible classes.

Josh Young, the organiser, said it was a means of meeting young people "where they are" and engaging with them in a world that they are familiar with.

Virtual reality has also been able to get creative in their lessons.

Mr Young for instance has created an underwater whale to teach the kids about Jonah's story. He also challenged the teenagers to build boats to learn more about Jesus who calmed an incoming storm.

The 27-year-old youth worker said: "Having a community for these youth is extremely important and I wanted to continue that in the lockdown.

They don't have any friends and there are some who struggle right now. They can chat, play, and interact with each other on Minecraft without ever physically there. It's a platform to connect and build communities.

"Young people" live in this online world , and the Bible teaches us to meet people where they are, in their local community.

"Jesus challenged the boundaries of what people believed to be normal worship, and he'd be happy that the church is making progress."

Around 20 kids, aged between 11 and 17 spend two and a half hours on server every Wednesday.

In that time they're free to explore the world or work on their own ideas however, for 30 minutes, they're transported to a common area to complete a Bible-themed mission.

Mr Young said they had ensured that the adults were able to stop bad language, and control who joined , and were given permission from parents for their children to join.

Rosie 15, who is 15 years old is one of the teenagers who regularly attend. She said, "I love it because it lets me chat with my friends while playing, it's just like meeting up for our regular youth club."

"I thought it was awesome that Josh brought everyone to one location. We also had a contest to build a boat based on Matthew Chapter 8, when Jesus stopped an incoming storm. My team won it because we made lightning storm clouds."
