Development[change | change source]

Andrew Gower originally created the game. He developed a game titled "DeviousMUD" in 1998. DeviousMud was a two-dimensional game. It was released for a brief time to the general public before being taken down. RuneScape is made up of three-dimensional graphics.

In the following days, Jagex was created. It is a reference to Java Gaming Experts. Andrew Gower is the head of development. The company was renamed Just About the Game Experience.

Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is an online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Jagex. The game can be played without purchasing a membership. The game was released on February 22, 2013 as an emulation of the main game. After players grew frustrated with changes to the game, Jagex opened a poll that allowed players to vote on whether or not to bring back an older version of the game that was released in 2007. The amount of support it received from Jagex would be determined by the number of votes. The poll ended with over 450,000 votes in support of the servers; this meant that it didn't need an additional subscription, and would have a tiny development team. To add new content to the game, the update must be approved by an all-game poll with a seventy percent ratio. OSRS has seen a variety of engine enhancements, new content and quality-of-life updates since its release. OSRS has twice the number of players playing than RuneScape despite having smaller staff and an infrequent update schedule. A mobile version of the game that was available for Android and iOS was launched in October of 2018.
