Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are currently in the process of updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more precise guidance on new technologies, we want to take the chance to let you know that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we support or allow. Let's have a closer look!

What is a NFT?

An NFT is an exclusive digital token that is not edited and is often bought using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated with any digital asset, such as an MPEG and a GIF. However digital art such as JPEGs are the most well-known use-case for an NFT. The purchase of an NFT is a token that proves ownership of the original digital file. However any digital file can be copied, deleted or moved. Blockchain and NFTs are also associated with speculation, in which prices are driven up quickly and, as we've observed, they can fall quickly.

What are the implications for me?

We strongly recommend to read the following guidelines if you are a creator or player involved in trading buying, selling, or trading of NFTs that use Minecraft (like skins and worlds). Otherwise, it's likely these changes won't affect you.

OUR POLICY ON MINECRAFT AND NFTS

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how the server owner can charge for access and how all players should have the same access to features. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community that allows everyone access to the same content. NFTs are able to create exclusion and scarcity models that are not in line with our Guidelines and the spirit and purpose of Minecraft.

Blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our client and server applications. Neither may Minecraft in-game content , such as skins, worlds and other items be used by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset. The reasons for this are as follows.

Certain companies have recently launched NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world skin packs and files. NFTs and blockchains can be used with Minecraft to create Minecraft collectible NFTs. This lets players earn NFTs through the performance of tasks on a server, or by earning Minecraft NFT rewards.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies results in digital ownership that is built on scarcity or exclusion. This is not in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion, playing together, and sharing our resources. NFTs do not encompass everyone in our community and create a stalemate of the haves and the not-so-haves. NFTs encourage speculation and profit, which we believe is incompatible with long-term happiness and prosperity for our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being reliable and could cost the customers who buy them. Info Third-party NFT implementations may also depend on blockchain technology. They may need an asset manager who can disappear without notice. There have instances where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently overvalued prices. We are aware that the creation process within our game is of great value and we aim to create a market where those values can be acknowledged.

To ensure Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience Blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. They cannot also be used to create NFTs using any game-related content, including skins and worlds, personal items, or other mods. We will also be watching closely the way blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that the above principles are not violated and to determine if it can provide more secure gaming or other practical and inclusive gaming applications. We don't plan to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft in the near future.

We're hoping to have more information to share with you soon. In the meantime, if you're interested in reading up on our guidelines, you can find them here. Keep an eye on us!
