Minecraft graphics to be more realistic'

A few days aftercancelling a long-delayed graphics update for Minecraft, Microsoft has unveiled a separateboost for the game's block-based visuals.



This update improves the way light bounces around Minecraft scenes, making them look more "realistic".



However, the graphics patch will be available to people with an Nvidia RTX graphics cards.



Microsoft stated that it would be released in 2020 but didn't give a date for release.





Hefty price

The RTX graphics cards use a technique called "ray tracing" which allows for an understanding of how light bounces around virtual scenes in games.



It can make on-screen visuals more real by creating shadows, colors, and the play of light in game environments appear more real.



"Ray tracer is at core of what we think will be next for Minecraft," stated Saxs Persson (creative director of Minecraft at Microsoft) in an announcement.



"In normal Minecraft, a block of gold just appears yellow however, with ray tracing enabled, you see the specular highlight, you are able to see the reflection, you may even see a mob of people reflected in it," he said.



Katharine Castle wrote that the Rock Paper Shotgun game's update appeared "impressive in practice" on the Rock Paper Shotgun news website.



She also mentioned she was concerned about how simple Minecraft's RTX updates will be to use.



Ms. Castle stated that it will require an "hefty" RTX to run all the different lighting effects, shadows and atmospheric effects at the same time.

Minecraft players are unable to play for five years.


Prices for Nvidia cards vary widely between online retailers. Low-end cards usually cost more than PS300. The most expensive cards in the range could cost thousands of dollars. This update will only be available for Windows 10.



Mojang, the Minecraft maker has announced that the update will be available as an option on the settings screen. This will allow users to test it while it is being developed.



It also stated that it was working to overhaul Minecraft's graphics engine. This should provide some visual improvements for people who don't have an RTX card, or who cannot play the game on a PC.



"Not all devices support the ray tracer, but we will see some graphics enhancements on the majority of devices," said Mojang. There is no date set for when this update will be available.



Both announcements were made just a few hours before the Gamescom gaming event, which will take place this week in Cologne.

The RTX announcement came less than a week following Microsoft's announcement that it would halt the "Super Duper Graphics Update" for Minecraft.



This was announced in 2017 and promised to improve the appearance of the game on all devices.



After two years of development The update was pulled due to "technical difficulties" in producing it.
