Every productive conversation that I've had was founded on a calm and respectful tone. It is incredible to me how just a little bit of anger or frustration can ruin a discussion and turn it into an unintentional door slam followed by a gentle apology.
My mom would request my sister Anna to stop playing minecraft in a manner that instantly expressed my mom's hatred for video games and her disappointment that my sister indulged in activities that were in direct opposition to the ideals of my mom. My mom's request would cause my blood to boil just because she was close enough to hear. In complete confusion, she would come to me and ask why Anna was ranting about how she wanted to be freed from her family. My mom would laud me as a magician, when I would request Anna to perform the same thing, but in a respectful, neutral tone and Anna would agree (with some resistance-my miracles only last so long).
