Minecraft to Join Microsoft

Mojang's team is joining Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios that created global blockbuster franchises like "Halo," "Forza," "Fable" and many more. Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technologies will enable "Minecraft" players to enjoy richer and faster worlds, more powerful tools for development, and more opportunities to connect with the "Minecraft" community.

Microsoft will buy Mojang in accordance with the agreement for $2.5 billion.

Mojang:

Minecraft has evolved from a basic game to an immense project. Although we're immensely proud of what Minecraft has grown into It was never Notch's idea to see it grow this large.

As you've probably heard, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder of Mojang. He's decided that he doesn't wish to take on the responsibility of running an organization with importance to the world. Over the past few years he's tried to tackle smaller projects however the pressure of managing Minecraft was too for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. However, he'll continue to make amazing things. Don't worry about that.

There are only a few buyers with the funds to expand Minecraft on a scale that it deserves. Since 2012, we have been working closely with Microsoft and were awed by their commitment to the game's development. We're confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in a phenomenal way.

Markus "Notch" Persson:

I don't consider myself to be a game developer. I create games for fun , and because I love programming and games. But I don’t create games with the goal of making them huge successes. I don't even intend to make a difference in the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me that it has changed the game. It didn't happen on chance. It's flattering, and it's interesting to see it slowly rise into the spotlight.

I'm not sure what to make of this.

Update (2014-09-19): Josh Centers:

Minecraft is the most mind-blowing game I have played. It's part sandbox game, part world-builder, part exploration game, part farming simulator, and part role-playing game. It has an "conclusion" of kind (that you must find on your own), but it doesn't really end. You can play by yourself or with other players and even manage your own Minecraft server and invite just your friends to join it. It's not difficult to spend hours playing Minecraft and millions of players already have.

It seems to me like a given. Microsoft has decided that when Apple goes hi-hi-res in their retina-based screens or operating system, Microsoft cannot differentiate itself. Instead they will "bet the entire company on red" and move to loco-res.

Imagine Windows Explorer with folder icons with resolution of 8x8

:-)

"I don't know what to do with this."

Minecraft is the most significant thing that happened to games since Pokemon. Everyone plays the game and If Minecraft is managed well it could be one of the most significant well-known, popular, and influential franchises for at least another ten years.

Games are extremely important to Microsoft, both because they are among the main drivers for selling new Windows PCs (and thus Windows licenses) as well as because of the Xbox. Microsoft has tried to create games that were a bit like Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) but they've generally not succeeded.

Sony already owns Little Pig Planet, and Nintendo is now entering the "creative games that allow players to create stuff, instead of just consuming stuff" field with Mario Maker. They're right, I think.
