When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it instantly drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. But it was very different (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) in that it didn't require players to leave your home to participate in its mining and building gameplay. Mattel now provides Minecraft Earth an entirely new play mode that Pokemon Go does not have NFC-enabled toys.

The Boost Mini figurines will retail for $5 each and will include various characters from the Minecraft franchise, including Steve, Alex, creepers ducks, a cow and others. Szv7 Each figurine is very cute by itself, but placing it against an NFC-capable device can unlock special abilities within Minecraft Earth for a certain period of time, which is displayed by an indicator on the screen. You'll also get XP for registration of the mini with the game, which is an additional incentive to collect them all (or borrow them from your friends).
The first batch of this spring's release includes 20 minis with 10 abilities. Mattel also offers a clip-on pouch that could be clipped to your belt if you're looking to carry your Minecraft Earth game with you on the move.
Mattel introduced new $3.50 blind-box miniatures that are themed to the original Minecraft. They also have larger figures measuring 3.5 inches that are compatible with the forthcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity, which stands over six inches tall, is fun because it's scaled to match those toys. The 3.5-inch figurines will be $10, with the monster being priced at $25 when it's launched in the fall.
